Calling all aspiring stars.
If you’ve got 2020 vision and dreams of a big musical future, the time has come to enter the St Kilda Festival’s New Music Stage competition. Entrants will be in the running to join the ten-act über-talented shortlist, of which one act will get the chance to perform on the Main Stage the following year. Oh, and also they’ll go home with $5,000. No big deal.
If you still have doubts for some reason, rest assured you’ll follow in the footsteps of homegrown superstars Client Liaison, Husky, Missy Higgins and Baker Boy. Last year’s shortlist featured Aussie legends Libby Steel, Flossy, JAMO, The Little Lord Street Band, Squid Nebula, Niine, Mane, The Merindas, Port Royal and HVNCOQ.
Port Royal took home the prize of the 2019 crowd favourite, and the rock’n’roll outfit will now get the chance to flaunt their stuff on the main stage to thousands of punters next year. Before they knew they won, Port Royal said the prestigious opportunity would be a “massive stepping-stone for them.”
“It would be huge. Just look at the stage, it’s incredible.”
They’re absolutely right too; this year’s festival had over 400,000 attendees. That’s a whole lot more than your best mate’s garage.
To enter, you’ll have to front a $34 entry free, which is a small price to pay for such a rare opportunity. To support the growth of Indigenous participation, the entry fee will be waived for bands that have a member or members who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
