This Friday December 1, Smalltown is back at Brown Alley with producer/DJs Mr. G and Ryan Elliott. Mr. G may be well into his 50s now, but he’s still absolutely killing it and dances harder than a suburban mum watching a local cover band. The passion he clearly still feels for the grooves is downright infectious. It’s hard to fathom, but he began his music career in the ‘80s when UK house music was in its infancy – the guy’s basically been there for all of dance music’s evolution. He’ll be bringing along his dusty old MPC and doing a live set for you, so don’t bloody miss this opportunity to see one of dance music’s deadset legends. Ryan Elliott will be bringing his bass-driven Detroit techno styles to back him up, snap up a ticket ASAP, because this will sell out.
Something else special is happening on Friday night too, the Federation Bells at Birrarung Marr are being fired up for the launch of the CLING CLANG: Compositions for Computer-Controlled Bells and Australian Electronics compilation LP from Heavy Machinery Records. It’s a free event featuring performances from Forces (first Australian show in two years), Zanias (first Australian show), friendships, Vacuum, Kangaroo Skull, Ash Wednesday, Naretha Williams and Ok Sure. I love that something as high-brow as the Federation Bells is open to desecration from some heavy hitting electro and techno producers, should be a cool thing. Kicks off at 8pm.
On Saturday at The Toff In Town, local label A Colourful Storm are having a showcase night featuring Rohan Rebeiro (My Disco, Kangaroo Skull) and Joshua Wells (Nerve) doing a collaborative set with Tarquin Manek and Bayu on support duties. Rebiero and Wells are both chaps who like a big, loud noise and are promising a high octane extended set, so brace yourselves.
Southside on Saturday night, a new night called Sphear is set to launch at Seven Nightclub. It’s been a slightly turbulent promo period after their headliner Marc Romboy pulled out of Earthcore and coming to Australia altogether, but they’ve managed to confirm veteran UK techno-head Dave Angel for an appearance, so all is not lost. Alongside him is a slew of techno and tech-house heavy hitting locals: Steve Ward, JPA, Sundelin, Steve Bleas, Kasey Taylor, Greg Sara, Abby Jane, Peruw and Cesur. Kicks off at 10pm.
