Dinner Review : The Rochester Castle Hotel

With 11 counter meals on the menu coming in at $10 each, it’s not an easy choice to make. The friendly bar staff give us a tip off that the star of the menu is the parma, with five parma varieties including a vegetarian option.

Often in my life I’ve tossed and turned at night, losing sleep over the harrowing choice I need to make between my two favourite pub meals on a menu – do I get the ever trusty nachos or the delicious comforting parma? The Rochy have conveniently fused my two true loves and delivered the unique Nacho Parma, a huge crunchy chicken schnitzel covered with corn chips, salsa, melted cheese, guacamole and sour cream. The massive parma could hardly be contained by the boundaries of the plate and it also came with thick cut chips and a tasty side salad, making it healthy (right?). It packed a flavour punch worthy of Mohammed Ali.

We also ate the tasty steak, coming in at a slightly higher price of $14 and served with winter mash and vegetables with a garlic butter cube accompanying the creamy mash. While the mushroom sauce could have used a little more flavour, the steak was decent and the sides were agreeable.

By the end of the meal, a few more people had come in to the pub and were populating the pool table and big old beer garden. The conversation of those around us were about 100% normal things – work, babes, and bands, man, peppered with the occasional swearword. No one was worried about keeping their elbows off the table, or about who would come to their gallery opening, or about which boutique beer was the right choice for them. The beauty of this place is in its completely unpretentious surrounds, generous serving sizes and great value offerings, served up with a cold cheap pint of draught and a smile. There’s nothing fancy about it, but it’s fantastic value for money. Cheerful and classic pub food, and actually cheaper than if you tried to cook it at home.
