Created by two chefs, White Light Vodka is bridging a gap in the Australian spirits market

Words by Tom Parker

The distillery is dedicated to making locally-produced, quality spirits affordable.

White Light Vodka is the brainchild of husband-wife duo Brendon Mitchell and Katie Krauss, who met over 20 years ago while working at Walter’s Wine Bar in Southbank.

The two have extensive hatted and Michelin experience in the food world. After the chefs transformed Prahran’s Hotel Max, now known as L’Hotel Gitan, into a popular gastro pub, they pursued their growing interest in distilling.

It was from their experience running a pub that not only were they exposed to great booze but also an intriguing gap in the market. While Mitchell and Krauss were able to get their hands on plenty of Australian wine and beer, they found it more difficult to find good local spirits that were cost effective enough for general use.

So White Light Vodka was born. White Light currently has three vodkas on offer with their Original accompanied by a Barrel Aged and WLV47 vodka.

Their Original Vodka has won a host of awards, taking out gold at both the 2020 and 2019 Tasting Australia Spirit Awards as well as Champion Vodka at the 2018 Australian Distilled Spirits Awards. The esteemed drop is characterised by its light citrus notes and a touch of sweet vanilla.

The Barrel Aged is a triple-distilled vodka aged in new Hungarian Oak barrels. Its flavour is steeped in savoury hints of nutty malt leading to fresh citrus and vanilla. Their WLV47 vodka is more in line with a traditional European vodka and is a higher strength (47% alcohol volume) – Mitchell and Krauss suggest serving it as a Dirty Martini.

White Light Vodka have always had a vision to provide both venues and consumers with an outstanding spirit that’s both affordable and accessible. Amid today’s turbulent world, their objective is now more important than ever.
