Carl De Villa delivers energetic pop record, ‘War Cry’

Exploring indie-pop, rock, gospel and soul.

You might be familiar with Filipino-Australian singer Carl De Villa through his appearances on The Voice and All Together Now. Channeling the pop songcraft of Sam Smith and Bruno Mars, De Villa has just arrived with his debut album, War Cry.

The album pulls together five original tracks as well as some remixes from Division 4 and Ray Isaac. From the vibrant pop number of ‘Fly’ that normalises relationship break-ups to the emotive ballad ‘In My Father’s Hands’ and gospel-infused soft rock of ‘Flaws’, through War Cry, De Villa lets his guard down as he attempts to filter anxieties from a vulnerable and equally-brave position.

The singer teamed up with renowned Sydney music producer Michael Tan and Melbourne’s Rhys Tolhurst to record the album while he wrote the lyrics alongside Adrik Kemp.

Ray Isaac’s remix of ‘Fly’ infuses the original with dance-infused keys and a bouncy bassline while Division 4’s remix of ‘War Cry’ takes a summery house music slant with its 4/4 beat and infectious keyboard hooks.
