Brunswick bar and bottle-o Rascal is celebrating its first birthday with a week of festivities

Happy one year, Rascal!

What an intriguing first 12 months it’s been for emerging Melbourne wine bar and bottle-shop Rascal. When they opened in September 2019, Brunswick was awash with social personnel – locals were drinking, dining and partying till their heart’s content.

For their first six months, Rascal was just getting their feet off the ground. Then COVID-19 hit.

Since mid-March when the world was upended, despite being still relatively green on the Melbourne hospitality circuit, Rascal weren’t happy to just sit around waiting for things to open up again.

They’ve been adapting, evolving, shapeshifting and growing to become an even more mischievous form of themselves. Such rascal-like behaviour resulted in the venue pivoting their wine bar into a weekly at-home finish-at-home food offering, an expansive bottle-o while they also introduced a new initiative designed to support local retailers affected by the pandemic.

To celebrate the three aspects of their evolution, Rascal is throwing a three-pronged week-long extravaganza to celebrate 12 months on this land. The three aspects of the birthday party are explained below.

Food

Since dinner was inaugurated at Rascal, the service has become supremely popular with the venue doing a stellar job to adjust with the times. For their one-year celebrations, Head Chef and Venue Partner Elliott Pinn has developed a multi-course menu that pays tribute to Rascal’s signature dishes.

Think charred carrots with goat’s curd, macadamia, bee pollen and Geraldton wax kicks things off before a spaghetti with swimmer crab, seaweed butter, asparagus and bottarga stands as just one aspect of the main course. Dessert is characterised by a chocolate-layered cake which Rascal have crafted in collaboration with Ratio Roasters.

For dinner, order via the Rascal website by 5pm on Thursday September 24. Vego and vegan options are available (portions for one also available) with delivery to take place Thursday-Saturday from 5pm-9pm or pick-up from the venue.

Drink

Rascal has partnered with a range of local alcohol legends to showcase the best of Brunswick and beyond during the celebrations. You can get your hands on discounted products from Noisy Ritual Wines, Gospel Whisky, Brunswick Aces, Wild Brew Kombucha, Little Brunswick Wine Co. and Transmission Wine Co. via the Rascal website.

Find the discounted products in the ‘Featured’ section of the Rascal website.

Support Local Support Brunswick Party Bags

To further celebrate local legends of the hospitality industry, Rascal has worked with some of their peers to put together a small gift bag for the venue’s first 100 customers. The initiative will spotlight the retailers featured in Rascal’s Support Local Support Brunswick store.

If you’re one of Rascal’s first 100 customers in-store or online during the week’s celebrations you will receive a small bag consisting of soap from Brunswick Soap House, chocolate from Ratio Roasters, coffee from First Press Coffee and a little birthday card from yours truly designed by local creative, Laura Holley aka Lawz Drawz.

Rascal’s first birthday celebrations run all week from Monday September 21. Keep up to date with the festivities via Rascal’s Facebook and Instagram page. Check out their website here.
