Above the Rim Events (founded by former man behind the helm of iconic cafe T-roy Browns) is bringing you a throwback of all throwbacks at one of Melbourne’s most iconic live music institutions featuring some of the biggest players in the music game.
If you roamed the streets of Fitzroy in the 90’s/00’s, fell in love once or twice (maybe on the same night), and shaked that tail to some unforgettable live music in to the early morning, chances are good you were at The Nightcat.
The 90’s was HOT and the hottest RNB tracks were the soundtrack in every teens bedroom. Never were nightspots so full of baggy cream suits, leg huggin skirts, denim overalls, bangles, hoop earrings, and some of the most memorable fashion still worn today.
For one night only, Fitzroy will be taken over by two of the most respected homegrown artists Melbourne has been blessed with:
DJ PERIL: northside OG, a pioneer in bringing the HipHop and street art culture across the seas to the streets of Melbourne. He is one half of 1200 techniques, creator of the famous Planet of the Breaks (1997 – 2002) and Soulclap (est 2002). He brings nothing, but respect and authenticity to his strictly vinyl sets.
TAVARES, headed by brothers Cisco and Joshua Tavares, are perhaps this county’s finest singing brothers, having ties with the famous US singing family with the same name. Over the last 10 years, they have steadily built a nation wide audience with their show stopping performances under many guises (RnBABE, Gospel Sundays, Fax Machine, Soul Sessions) bringing with them a backing band of all-stars and world class musicians (Aaron Mendoza, David Tweedie, Carmen Smith, Grant Windsor, Andy Fissenden, Pat on Bass) to create what many describe as the best RNB show this side of that golden 90’s era. TAVARES are back after a 10 year hiatus and are ready to blow the roof off with that bounce and swag so widely loved.
Hennessy is backing the night with some of their finest liquor and cocktails, and why wouldn’t they! I mean, if Tupac loved Hennessy so much he created a song named after it, then best they be front and centre.
Get in early for the media wall and red carpet. Dress to impress!
