The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) has partnered with Village Cinemas to bring you Australia’s first indoor drive-in cinema that is weatherproof and daytime-friendly.
To make use of the MCEC’s sizable and equally-versatile space, the Drive In(Door) Cinema, as it’s called, will host screenings at all times of the day, offering child-friendly matinee sessions over the summer school holidays, as well as later sessions for the big kids and adults out there.
To make it fit, the drive-in cinema will be situated within the MCEC’s enormous exhibition bays, spaces that are normally utilised for global business conferences and pop-culture exhibitions.
These spaces are currently dormant due to the COVID-19 pandemic; such disruption was cause for creativity, and so the MCEC leapt at this new innovation.
Head along to the Drive In(Door) Cinema and catch screenings of cinematic classics such as Top Gun, The Breakfast Club, Dirty Dancing and Clueless. Kids can expect to see the likes of Frozen, Shrek as well as the recently-released Trolls: World Tour if they head along during the day.
The space can accommodate 174 cars and will operate under the according COVID-safe protocols. There will be an in-car food and beverage service that can be accessed via the Skip app as well as classic Aussie cinema candy bar menu, offering all the iconic treats such as popcorn and choc tops.
