And you can bet it has a ripper soundtrack.
A film drawing from an infamous period of music history is coming to select Australian cinemas this month.
Based on Kieran Hurley’s award-winning play of the same name, BEATS follows Scottish teens Johnno and Spanner as they take the plunge into the UK’s illegal rave scene.
Set in 1994, when raves had been outlawed as part of the UK’s Criminal Justice Act which gave police permission to remove people from events “wholly or predominantly characterised by the emission of a succession of repetitive beats”, BEATS is a coming of age story exploring rebellion and the massive cultural movement that was the UK’s illegal rave scene.
Directed by Brian Welsh (Black Mirror) with a soundtrack featuring the likes of The Prodigy, Plastikman and Hudson Mohawke, BEATS is a visceral reflection of the time and culture it portrays.
Having collected two British Independent Film Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Sound, the acclaimed film will hit a handful of Aussie cinemas across February and March, giving Australian audiences a taste of the era’s pivotal party scene and the anarchy it represented.
