It’s June and officially winter which means two things – 1. You can dig out all those long coats and scarves from the back of your closet and 2. There’s piping hot, oven fresh New Slang at The Channel on Friday June 2. The series of all ages gigs every month is back again, with no holds barred for the second toasty banquet of the year. This month’s serving is a healthy helping of local hip hop with narly, DEX and Sophiegrophy. Doors open at 6pm and tickets are $10 through the Arts Centre website.

Have you heard about I Manage My Music before? If you haven’t and you’re involved in the sometimes terrifying, sometimes terrific world of music management, then you’ve been missing out. I Manage My Music has partnered with Music Victoria for a day-long workshop. The goal is to nurture budding self-managed artists, in addition to providing tools and encouragement to help cultivate confidence. The workshop involves talks from current movers in the industry, as well as constructive advice on participant’s current music projects. The next workshop sprouts up this Saturday June 3 and guidance from Cash Savage, Chloe Turner, Genna Alexopoulos, Alex Zaccaria and Jen Cloher. If this has planted any tiny seed of interest in your mind then head to the I Manage My Music website now.

That’s not the only great thing happening this weekend though, ‘cause there’s a super soulful service going down at the Brunswick Town Hall on Sunday June 4. Rhythm and Soul for Refugees will be rocking out the dust and cobwebs of the atrium all afternoon to bring the community together. Authentic funk stalwarts The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra will burst and splatter energy all over the laminate floor alongside Copperhead Brass Band. In addition to tunes, there will also be free food and refreshments, plus all money raised goes toward the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. It’s a great arvo gig for an even greater cause. Tickets available through Eventbrite.

Also on for the weekend is a super cute show in the heart of Fiztroy at Oh Jean Records. Get down for a late Saturday arvo diddy with the loud, weird but always punk outfit, Root Rat. They will be continuing the raucous celebration for their recent 7’’ release. The show kicks off at a cruisy 4pm. It’s totally free and all are welcome. Bring your mum, bring your dog, bring your rat. I’m sure they will like it.
