While you might pay no mind to the sustainability of your drinking habits, your favourite drop can cause some nasty damage. While we’re all aware of the problems with plastic straws and six-pack rings, the production side of alcohol can have its share of hidden drawbacks, too.

This is something Melbourne’s newest beer merchants, Urban Alley Brewery, aim to combat. The brewery has mapped a carefully considered sustainability model to ensure that their carbon footprint is as small as possible.

In addition to using biodegradable six-pack rings which are not only not harmful to marine life but edible too, Urban Alley Brewery also break down biowaste and turn it into fertiliser, recycle wastewater through a treatment plant and lower their usage by partnering up with a neighbouring distillery to ensure energy is being used efficiently.

Of course, taste is an important factor here and Urban Alley haven’t let their product suffer at the hands of their mission for sustainable practice. In fact, you’ve probably already tasted their beer at Naked For Satan, The Smith Prahran and The Emerald Peacock, though they’ll be expanding both their range and its availability.
