The cult classic will receive a long-awaited follow-up.
In 1986, Jim Henson teamed up with George Lucas to create Labyrinth, a musical fantasy film that starred David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. The story follows a 16-year-old Sarah (Connelly) on her quest to rescue her baby brother Toby. With 13 hours on the clock, Sarah must navigate a labyrinth to track Toby down, who has been taken away by the villainous Jareth the Goblin King (Bowie).
Ever since Bowie’s passing in 2016, rumours have swirled about a sequel to the film and we’ve now learned that Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson will be taking on a follow-up to the revered movie.
Enlisted by TriStar Pictures for the role, Derrickson will be joined by screenwriter Maggie Levin for Labyrinth #2. The legacy of The Jim Henson Company will stand strong with Lisa Henson set to produce the film and Brian Henson set to executive produce.
Ever since Labyrinth‘s original release in 1986, the film has solidified a cult following among Bowie fans and beyond. There have been a host of related comic books and novels written in the wake of the ’80s classic, while an annual Labyrinth-themed masquerade ball in LA is regarded as one of the largest of its kind in the world.
A date for the sequel has yet to be announced but there have been forecasts for early 2022.
