Order Of Melbourne

Every bar could benefit from a spot of taxidermy. It certainly adds a dash of weirdness to Order of Melbourne, located in Melbourne's CBD. Nothing like a dead fox behind the bar to show you mean business. Mind you, the place is full of quirks. Walk up a few flights of stairs and you'll find yourself in what looks like a renovated concert hall. Whatever purpose the room once served, it's since been divided up into separate lounges areas with a DJ set up in the centre. The furnishings are a jumble of wooden cafe tables, old lamps, ottomans and Japanese silk screens.

The bar provides the main focus and has an imposing wall of alcohol and brick-a-brac behind it. Taking pride of place is our friend, the dead fox. There's an extensive selection of (reasonably) priced wines on offer and beer available in longneck form if you're some kind of drinking savage. Either way, it's a relaxed vibe and home to both RMIT students from across the road and suits.

If the weather is holding up be sure to venture upstairs to the rooftop bar. Although it's tiny, it features a South Pacific-style shanty bar and wonderful views of the surrounding city. Whether you opt for the main bar or the rooftop, Order of Melbourne is a well kept secret that provides a sanctuary from the streets below. And besides, anywhere with a dead fox and a shanty bar is okay by us.
