Grumpy's Green

Combining local microbrews, retro lounges and a dimly lit ambience, Grumpy's Green is a decidedly Melbourne-style venue. Where other cities might opt for a shiny, neon-lit bar, this is far more subdued and discrete affair - a place where you can sample local beers in a relaxed, stylish environment while also doing your thing towards a sustainable earth. Underpinning the design and drinking options at Grumpy's Green is a commitment to minimising carbon footprints. On a very basic level, that means all the wines and beers are locally produced at microbreweries to avoid carbon emissions from transportation and every drink you buy will contribute to a carbon offset scheme. The venue also utilises tank water wherever possible.

The local beer list is ridiculously large and takes in over 50 varieties - most of which you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else in the city. Ever tried Prickley Moses Otways wheat beer? No? Exactly. If you're a beer fan and want to try something outside the usual import selection (come on, it's time to ditch that Corona and lime), then Grumpy's Green is like Christmas come early.

The actual fit out is a suitably Melbourne mix of op shop charm and sophistication. The front bar is piled high with couches and offers plenty of space to while away an afternoon. There's a separate, upstairs section and you'll find plenty of little nooks and crannies to hide in if you want to lay low (read: enjoy a romantic date). There's also a lovely beer garden outside, trivia every Wednesday with $3 pots, music five nights a week, happy hour on Friday and a function space available free. It's all you really need to get some friends together for exotic beer adventures. So, eat, drink and save the world!
