It's always nice to see a man with a sailor's hat and anchor tattoo on his upper arm behind the bar. It instantly gives the place a bit of character. The high ceilings, period furniture, flaking wallpaper, mini library and ridiculously long bar, also do their bit to make Cookie stand out from the crowd.
While the venue is home to a cross-section of suits, students, musicians and other artistic types, it tends to sway between bar/restaurant and bustling beer hall at different times of the day and week. Duck in during daylight hours and you can order a Thai-influenced meal from the kitchen to go with your beer, and an outside table overlooking Swanston Street. Check back on a Friday evening and it's standing room only as everyone fights their way to bar for a round of beers.
Speaking of beers, Cookie has one of the most impressive collections around. There are 10 different beers available on tap, and a further 85 imported beers hidden away behind the bar. There's also an impressive cocktail menu available if that's more your thing - just watch out for the Long Island Iced Teas. Whatever your chosen drink, Cookie has a whole lot of character and a friendly crowd throughout the week.
