Cape Cafe is pitched towards a decidedly arty/backpacker crowd - one look at the decor is enough to tell you that. It's all 1960's throwback couches, pop art statues, gaudy wallpaper and bar stools out of a 1950's diner. In other words, it's a very Fitzroy cliche of what a South Yarra venue looks like. Only in this case it's 100% accurate. Not that the locals (or the backpackers) are complaining. The decor and the atmosphere are comfortable enough and the front room is complemented by a courtyard and an upstairs space with a dancefloor. Live music is on offer throughout the week with jazz, funk and Latin being the main soundtrack. The crowds tend to be as multi-cultural as the music.
While the drink selection isn't particularly innovative, it gets the job done. Cape Cafe is a pub at heart and as such beer is their main poison. You'll find a good variety of local and imports on tap and several more bottled varieties behind the counter. Spirit and wine options are reasonable enough but if you're after a cocktail this isn't really the venue. If, on the other hand, you want a laidback drinking hole with a bohemian vibe, then Cape Cafe is a good alternative to some of the more crowded establishments down the road.
