Melbourne may not be wanting for pubs and bars, but even in a city saturated with entertainment options, Bertha Brown manages to rise above the competition. Located down the 'wrong' end of Flinders Street, it provides a unique mix of pub, local hangout, lounge and Middle Eastern-inspired meals. Housed at the base of the historic Markillies Hotel, Bertha Brown is surprisingly large once you make your way inside. A long bar runs along one entire wall, a selection of booths sit opposite and further back you'll find a dining area that snakes around to the right. The fit-out and ambiance are relaxed and casual throughout - exposed bricks and industrial flooring provide a basic canvas on which an assortment of classic wood furniture and retro lounges rest. Colourful feature walls add a bit of flair to all this. Aside from the aforementioned Middle Eastern-inspired menu, Bertha Brown provides a great cocktail menu. The house specials are all a budget-friendly $12 and include concoctions like The Queen Mother - Bombay Sapphire, Cinzano Blanco, lemon and apple juice. Naturally, there's a selection of local and imported beers on hand alongside a decent wine menu. With a mix of DJs and live acts throughout the week, plus a come as you are attitude, Bertha Brown is worth the trek down Flinders Street.
