Being owned by Iian Hewitson and ex-wife/business partner, Ruth Allen, gives this bar an instant hit of credibility, but it's when you absorb the international range of alcohol and high-quality liquor that you get a true sense of what Barney Allen's is about. It's not just a casual beer garden offering meals, nor is it a handy plasma screen showing sports or news. It's hospitality through and through. While this isn't a cocktail bar per se, staff will whip you up all manner of mixed drinks, especially a kicking Bloody Mary to help ease you into the weekend. Plant yourself in one of the leather sofas, surrounded by deep red walls and local art; it's just the setting if you want to indulge in a Hewitson-approved glass of red - just ask Huey, he's usually at the bar. And while the place tends to get a little hectic on Friday and Saturday nights, it's never so busy that you have to shout to be heard. A reliable range of tap beers, including Heineken, can be found riding shotgun to a hefty array of imported bottles. The wine list is also a favourite for many St Kilda wine buffs, with regular changes depending on the season and/or vintages available. Check the specials board regularly and you won't be disappointed.
