How would you describe your music?

Well this next album, the way that I’ve envisioned it, it’s like a 60s cult vibe. Like all the 60s guitars with the desperado guitar sounds. I feel like I’m going back to all the stuff that I loved when I was growing up, like Immaculate Collection. Every song has its own feel. There’s one that’s slightly punky and there’s also a few pop songs in there.

Which artists influence you?

Which artists influence you?

I’ve been listening to The Cure a lot. The Immaculate Collection by Madonna. And I like a few sounds from Technotronic. I feel like I’m at a point where everything is influencing me.

Where you always playing music and singing when you were younger?

No, not really. I used to sing in the back of the car but I was really shy and I didn’t study music at school. I actually wanted to be a fashion designer and I studied fashion. But when I was studying I started going to these jam sessions and just started getting interested in that world. So I started quite late.

Tell me about your new album.

Me and Dan MacDonald, the drummer in my band, just put together the demo’s and I feel like they’re really strong. We just got all the ideas down and taken them to our producer. We’ve been talking about the sound and just getting really specific about it. I’m really excited about it, I think it’s going to come together really well.

Your other music is a lot darker compared to your new stuff which is a lot happier and something you can dance to. Why do you think there was a change?

I just feel like I’m at a time in my life where I just want to have fun. I don’t feel so dark and broody. I just feel like I want to dance around.

You worked with Clare Bowditch. What was that like?

It was really awesome. She’s so cool and such a great chick. We got together at her studio and we just jammed out and recorded our jams. It was really great because we were completely on the same vibe as to the direction of the track. It was really lovely and it was so easy to work with her. I’ve never really collaborated with anyone so I was pretty freaked out.

If you could perform with anyone who would you choose?

I’d go back in time and do a song with Technotronic.

How did the opportunity for you to perform at the famous Spiegeltent come about?

We heard that it was going to be there for a while so we just applied to play there. We knew we were going to be releasing the single around that time and thought it would be a good thing to do. It’s such a great venue so I think it’ll be really fun.

What’s it like playing with the Underground Orchestra?

I called it the Underground Orchestra initially because it was a 12 piece mini orchestra but now there’s just four of us that play live so I’m not really going to call it the Underground Orchestra anymore. So I don’t really know what to say about that.

What would you say is the biggest highlight in your career?

I’m kind of taking the question a different way. The biggest highlight for me would be being able to get up in the morning and make music in my studio and then play with awesome musicians.
