The Corner's less than a quarter full as the Sand Pebbles take the stage and I'm wondering if, on a cold Tuesday night, Dean Wareham (of the seminal dream pop band Galaxie 500) will pull the numbers he deserves. Warming up for Wareham, the Pebbles seem at ease playing their version of nuggets-y psychedelic pop and enjoy a bit of banter with the crowd between songs.

The back-story of the Sand Pebbles is as colourful as the band’s music. Hanging out with Jeff Bridges in Los Angeles, pulling down screamers at the MCG, wandering through the forests with a mind full of fly agaric mushrooms, chewing the fat with surviving members of the Small Faces, writing scripts for television soap operas, even attending primary school with the enfant terrible of Internet...

The latest musical project for former Luna members Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips will be hitting Australian shores this October for a very special performance of Galaxie 500 tracks.


After seminal alternative rock outfit Galaxie 500 disbanded in the early 1990s, Dean Wareham went on to form Luna. Britta Phillips joined Luna as a bassist in 2000, and stayed with the band up...

Melbourne's garage-psych luminaries Sand Pebbles are gearing up to launch their fifth full-length Dark Magic.


The latest record features a star-studded list of contributors, inclusing Dean Wareham (Galaxie 500), Britta Phillips (Luna), Tim Holmes (Death In Vegas), Will Carruthers (Spacemen 3, Spiritualized) and Mr Alex DeLarge himself, Malcolm McDowell.
