Instigated by the desire of three music-lovers to play and create music with one another, RETURN TO YOUTH was born. The alternative folk-pop trio consisting of Marites, Matt, and Alan giving life to their original, melodic creations using fresh, vibrant shapes and rhythms that come from the heart. After performing together at various events during high school, the trio decided to broaden their ho rizons through creating and developing their own unique sound, based around their vast array of musical influences. RETURN TO YOUTH’s overall sound is most comparable to that of artists such as The Jezabels, Young Heretics, Sarah Blasko, and Something for Kate. Exploring their creative and musical capabilities in pursuit of songs that are pensive and thought-provoking; each of their songs encompasses a different sound to the last. With a diversity of rhythm, catchy melodies, and story-like lyrics often based on observation; each song encapsulates themes of hope, anguish, bitterness, and joy. In RETURN TO YOUTH’S one year of existence, the band has written and self-recorded their debut EP, ‘GLOW IN THE DARK’, which was recorded entirely in their drummer Alan’s lounge room, and successfully launched at Revolver Upstairs in October 2011. The band spent their first few months together writing and churning out ideas, while sharing their love of imitating foreign accents. While the accents were soon left behind, the musical ideas jelled together to form the six tracks found on the ‘GLOW IN THE DARK’ EP. The past year has seen RETURN TO YOUTH playing events ranging from The Corner Hotel Unsigned Festival, to Revolver’s Melbourne Fresh Grand Final, FREEZA regional battle of the bands Grand Final, Melting Pot at the Northcote Social Club, various flood relief concerts, and of course their EP launch at Revolver. Forthcoming gigs include playing at Melbourne’s Moomba Festival in March, 2012.
