Ty Segall : Freedom’s Goblin

Ty Segall is a garage rock virtuoso, and with Freedom’s Goblin he lands the Millennium Falcon blindfolded on the top of Mount Doom.
Case in point, track four: Segall’s take on Hot Chocolate’s ‘Everyone’s A Winner’. Despite chugging through this cheeseball classic with just his voice, an electric guitar, some tom drums and a cowbell, Segall captures the bold and counter-intuitively ‘inclusive sleaze’ of the song’s simplistic optimism. Loosely implying that getting boned is your honour, he sings, “Everyone’s a winner baby that’s the truth, making love to you is such a thrill.”
There’s no common thread or overriding vision with this album; it sounds odd to say but it’s even less refined than the fuzzed-out sonic blitzkrieg that was Segall’s celebrated 2010 album ‘Melted’.
For an artist to place the song ‘My Lady’s On Fire’, a song that drips with the transcendent tenderness of Cat Steven’s ‘Father and Son’, on the same record as simmering cock-rock of ‘The Main Pretender’ is precocious to say the least.
Ty Segall is one of the most important rock musicians of this lifetime, have a listen.
