Steve Boyd’s Rum Reverie

Who are we chatting to and what do you do in the band? Steve Boyd. I’m the singer and guitar player.

What do you reckon people will say you sound like? Big, bold and brassy with lashings of New Orleans spice and a generous serve of originality – I hope.

What do you love about making music? The creative challenge and huge reward when you get it just right.

What do you hate about the music industry? The fact that you still get paid the same as you did 30 years ago. The Voice, Australian Idol and all that malarky. One could carry on endlessly about the negatives.

What inspires your music most? Fearless people, who aren’t afraid to tell it like it is, take risks and reach for the stars.

If you could travel back in time and show one of your musical heroes your stuff, who would it be and why? I assume you mean a dead musical hero so that’s a hard one. On a whim I’ll say Leonard Cohen because he always seemed to give such sage advice.

What can a punter expect from your live show? Sassy brass, funky double bass, thunderous drum grooves, heart, soul and honesty. Oh, and original compositions.

What’ve you got to sell CD-wise? Our debut EP Healers and Howlers. An album on the way early next year (Hoodoo Hipshake).  The single Spencer P Jones available through the normal digital retailers eg: Spotify, bandcamp etc.

Steve Boyd’s Rum Reverie will perform at Cherry Bar on Sunday November 19, with special guest Pugsley Buzzard Trio.
