Q&A: Oscar + Martin

What's the biggest challenge to being an independent artist?

There is a sense of security knowing that the people you are working with are doing it out of passion, and not for profits. It feels clean and honest. The challenges are many, one in my opinion is that you are usually learning on the job, so mistakes are inevitable.

And the best bit?

Good art!

Who is your favourite Australian artist/band of all time, and why?

There is a few, but for this I would have to say Oren Ambarchi. He has done so many releases! And so many collaborations, and developed so many varied, interesting and unique sounds. I respect that.

What new music to you find exciting at the moment?

I am really enjoying the amount of young 'bedroom' producers who are making beats and dance music. I think there has been a shift in the acceptability of a really resolved 'hi fi' sound. In the past you could only make a nice sounding record with a lot of financial support, where as now pretty mach anybody could if they really wanted to.

What makes Australian music special?

Even with the internet, Australia still feels really removed from the rest of the world. We have a very unique temperament. I think one that is either restless and energetic or patient and observant.

Is this the first time you've been nominated by something and how does it feel?

Yes this is the first time! I think we are working very hard, and it's lovely to have that validated.
