Q&A: Abbe May
The Jagermeister Independent music awards celebrate independent music - what does it mean to you to be an independent artist?
Hard work.
What's the biggest challenge to being an independent artist?
I suppose for most independent musicians there is a lower level of resources at hand to assist you. Less money, less help, But more control creatively.
And the best bit?
More creative control. My indie label Source are really great about letting me do what I want in this regard.
Who is your favourite Australian artist/band of all time, and why?
Beasts of Bourbon. They can be dirtier and more dangerous and than anyone.
What new music to you find exciting at the moment?
I like a Perth duo called Hootenanny. They are like the bratty love child of The White Stripes and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
What makes Australian music special?
Australians have a very low tolerance for bullshit. So the music that sticks around is usually pretty authentic.
Who is your favourite opponent from the nominees within your category?
Adalita is the queen of Australian rock and roll. She is my favorite. I also like the Jezabels. They make beautiful music.
What are your plans for the rest of 2011?
Have just started recording my next album so will continue that over the summer. We are playing some festivals before heading to the US to tour.
Abbe May is nominated for Best Independent Artist at the 2011 Jagermeister Independent Music Awards. The winners will be announced on tonight.
