Meet Melbourne's smoky new jazz club sessions

Going down as part of Stonnington Jazz Festival.

Thanks to Stonnington Jazz Festival, Club Sessions are back for 2018 and they’re going to give you the chance to dance the night away to a mixture of beats and a conglomeration of genres.

As the cold sets in and the knitwear comes out, it’s no surprise that many Melburnians are craving a bit of a boog. Thanks to Stonnington Jazz, Club Sessions are back for 2018 and they’re going to give you the chance to dance the night away to a mixture of beats and a conglomeration of genres.

Billy Davis, the Melbourne-based keyboardist, pianist and composer blending contemporary jazz with hip-hop, funk, R&B and gospel, is kicking off the series on Friday May 11. He’ll be sharing the stage with The Good Lords and P-UniQue and DJ Mz Rizk, which is sure to be a huge collaboration.

Saturday May 12 will see Sydney’s improvisational five-piece, GODTET, bring a hip-hop-meets-jazz-meets-soul-meets-psychedelia jam session to the table. They’ll be supported by DJ Shio Otani and La Sape DJs.

Soul artist Emma Donovan will team up with The PutBacks to bring songs of grief and redemption to Club Sessions on Friday May 18, while their mates from Hope Street Records, Leisure Centre (formerly The Do Yo Thangs) and DJ Lyndelle Wilkinson, will provide support in the form of two very jazzed up sets.

The final night of the Club Sessions on Saturday May 19 has already been dubbed “one huge party”, as self-described “dirty beatnik rock ‘n’ roll” band Jazz Party and DJ Richie1250 take the stage by storm for one final boog. Jazz Party are renowned for their “wild live shows” that have graced the crowds of Golden Plains, Dark Mofo, WOMADelaide, and Brunswick Music Festival.

Do yourself a favour and don’t miss this series of groove-infused dance sessions; an array of Melbourne’s most talented jazz musicians are at your fingertips.

All Stonnington Jazz Club Sessions will be hosted by Melbourne Bowling Club, 138 Union Street, Windsor. The Sessions roll into MBC on Friday 11, Saturday 12, Friday 18, and Saturday 19 May. Tickets available now at Stonnington Jazz’s website.
