Julian Abrahams From Mustered Courage
Who are you and what are you doing here?
I'm Julian Abrahams. I flatpick the shit out of the acoustic guitar 'til my wrist hurts, sing some harmonies 'til Nick says I don't suck and write some tunes until someone says they like one.
W hat do you reckon people will say you sound like?
Now that banjos and mandolins are 'cool' again I think we're gonna get the Mumford and Sons reference a lot, although we sound a lot more like a bluegrass band trying to break free from 1 - 4 - 5 chord structures.
What do you love about making music?
Playing with other great musicians and learning from them constantly. It's also rare that people actually do something they love but you can guarantee that if you ask any serious muso, they will say that they love what they do - even though most of us are on the poverty line!
What do you hate about the music industry?
Too many bands young and old are focused on trying to get famous rather than playing great music really well and making art - even if no one hears it at the end of the day… oh, and out of tune guitars can go and get fucked.
If you could travel back in time and show one of your musical heroes your stuff, who would it be and why?
Jaco Pastorius. If Jaco said that any of my music or playing was half decent then I'd be a happy man. If he said it sucked then I'll keep working twice as hard.
What can a punter expect from your live show?
High energy original bluegrass tunes played with a rock'n'roll mentality.
Shit loads of solos, three part vocal harmonies and a few cheeky pop covers.
We're releasing our brand new full length album next week. You should check it out. Our album launch is this Saturday September 10 at Thornbury Theatre with supports from Uncle Bill and Fingerbone Bill.
