Getting to know Wally Howlett

We catch up with the talented singer-songwriter.

Who are we chatting to and what do you do in the band?
You are speaking to Wally Howlett. I put the Wallet Howlett into Wally Howlett & The Chest Hairs.
What do you reckon people will say you sound like?
We’ve heard Belle & Sebastian, Fleetwood Mac and even Paul Kelly. I also often get mistaken for Glen Hansard when I’m busking on the street. I’ve been in quite a few tourist photos for that reason.
What do you love about making music?
I love everything about it: writing it, performing it, and listening to it. My tastes are really eclectic -- I have Savage Garden, Belle & Sebastian, Kodaline and N.E.R.D on rotation in my car. Most of them I picked up for 50 cents a pop from the op shop.
What do you hate about the music industry?
I hate that I’m not more famous in it.
What inspires your music most?
I’m inspired by little, everyday things, like the people I meet and encounters I have.
If you could travel back in time and show one of your musical heroes your stuff, who would it be and why?
George Harrison, because he is obviously the best Beatle.
What can a punter expect from your live show?
Ridiculous banter, catchy songs and a really luscious bunch of Chest Hairs. Can I do a winky face? ;)
What’ve you got to sell CD-wise?
We have a Wally Howlett self-titled EP with five original songs for the low, low price of just $10. Or wait till it lands at your nearest op shop, in which case 50 cents.

Wally Howlett & The Chest Hairs are playing with Villah Sunday October 29 from 2pm to 5pm at Carlton Brewhouse
