Electronic this week: Wata Igarashi is in town, Hugs&Kisses launch free DJ school, and boogie at Albert Park Golf Course

This Saturday July 7, Cool Room is back and teaming up with the underground immersive events team ONO to bring you psychedelic techno wizard Wata Igarashi from Japan. The last few years have seen Igarashi’s profile outside Japan rise sharply. With a series of standout releases across Midgar Records and The Bunker New York, he’s established himself at the vanguard of modern deep techno. The former skate-punk and jazz-head always seeks to take listeners on a varied musical journey, and his extended DJ set will be sure to get those synapses firing. On support duties are Jennifer Loveless, Spilt Silo (live) and Mariah Sliwczynski. It’s going down at Rubix Warehouse in Brunswick from 8pm.
A free DJ school primarily aimed at the disadvantaged or those under-represented in the electronic music scene has kicked off at Hugs&Kisses. Called ‘About Time’, it’ll be held every Thursday night by volunteer professional DJs who’ll foster participants’ skills on the big Funktion One sound-system. If you would like to sign up, send cosi.hugsandkisses@gmail.com an email with a little paragraph on why you want to be a part of the project, and a list of five of your favourite tracks and why you love them. They’re also in need of more volunteers, so if you’re an experienced DJ who’s interested in doing some good, drop them a line.
On Saturday, Arteq are throwing an evening party for their third birthday, boldly going where techno rarely – if ever – goes, Albert Park Golf Course. Yup, the Greenfields function space, which is more accustomed to holding wedding receptions and yoga retreats, will be hosting Egyptian DJ/producer Raxon for his debut trip Down Under, alongside locals Machete, Kirk Chetcuti, Karl Devic and Jeremy Daeng from 3pm. Toasta food truck will be bringing the dinner munchies too, so if you fancy a sunset boogie by the lake while golfy-types look on in horror, grab yourself a ticket quick-smart as final release tickets are on sale now.
