Columbus : A Hot Take On Heartbreak

Columbus are looking in the rear-view mirror and recalling the glory days of emo.

Columbus aren’t sonic adventurers stoically searching for new aural frontiers. Rather, they’re looking in the rear-view mirror and recalling the glory days of emo when the likes of Shihad, Eskimo Joe and Green Day meant something. There’s no ragged brutality or the nastiness of trying to magnify the physical degradation of an oppressive society’s pitfalls.

With an earnest desire to have their say, Columbus have the derivative filter set on high. Distraught, heartbroken vocals on ‘Give Up’ and ‘Wake Up With A Heart Attack’ ensure that these songs are brim full of raw emotion. Of course this is necessary, certainly for a signature torch song like ‘Piece Of Shit’. Low self esteem, malevolent bass and hard hit drums make for a merciless rhythm section for this song. “I dropped out of school when l was 23” is an unexpected throw away lyric with just enough spice to infect your headspace as Columbus seek to set a gold standard for B-grade teenage angst.

Stronger than their debut effort, it remains concerning that such young men continue to walk around with such tortured souls. Overblown at times but at least they sound like they believe in it.
