Summer in Melbourne is well and truly heating up, and the Adelphi Hotel is celebrating. From now until the end of January, they’ll be opening up their iconic rooftop pool for a series of weekend pop-up pool sessions. This year it is Pimms, the fruity drink everyone knows and loves, that is showcasing over the summer series. Grab yourself a refillable Pimms cup and take a refreshing dip in the hotel’s open-air lap pool. And, if you dare, swim out to the glass-bottomed cantilevered section of the rooftop that hangs out over Flinders Lane, and watch the passers by below in true summer style. With dinner and desserts also served ‘til late at the hotel’s highly acclaimed restaurant Om Nom, there’s no reason to spend your weekend anywhere else than lounging around in the sun at the Adelphi.
Beer company and all round legends Yak Ales are bringing the smoky, meaty taste of the United States to Melbourne for a third year this February, for a festival bigger and better fed than ever before. The event will bring life and delicious smelling smoke to the Flemington Showgrounds when it showcases the latest in barbecue, outdoor cooking equipment, live bands, great drinks and Australia's most prestigious barbecue contest, sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society. As part of the weekend, the one-off Yak Ales Barbeque Festival All-Star Dinner banquet will bring together pit masters from around the globe, including Memphis Barbecue Co.’s world championship whole hog and a selection of Southern sides, with drinks by Yak Ales and Pepperjack Wines. From what started as a weatherworn sandwich shack selling $1 burgers along the coast of Noosa, Betty’s Burgers has just opened its first store outside of Queensland, located on the corner of Elizabeth and Collins Street in Melbourne. Keeping to its local beach town style, the menu is simple and deliciously effective. Betty will be offering a classic beef burger as well as a chicken, pork, mushroom and kids burger on offer, with a side of fries or onion rings. If you’re still peckish after that, Betty’s Burgers have brought their house-made ‘concrete’ ice-cream recipe, churned extra thick, to Melbourne. Enjoy it with bits of doughnut, M&Ms, peanut brittle or in a very thick shake. The venue is also licensed, so you can down a beer, wine or cider with your iconic burger, inspired from the streets of Noosa. Betty’s is open daily from 10am until late on 97 Elizabeth Street.
