Description

Exotica is a form of tropical-jazz pioneered in the 1950s to sound exotic, atmospheric, and occasionally savage, but still wonderfully listenable to a westerner’s ear. Exotica is the per- fect music to complement a tiki bar. It ranges from mellow to swinging but always has an aluring sound.

The Luwow presents TABOO a festival starring the best names in Australia’s Exotica music scene. TABOO one night of suave music, island delights, exotic performers, tropical cock- tails across two rooms at The Luwow. GYPSY WOOD- After working in cabaret, burlesque and contemporary dance for over a decade Gypsy Wood has emerged as a highly original performer with a penchant for the comic, clever, shocking and divine.

ENSEMBLE PACIFICA- A musical travelogue of the Pacific rim and beyond. Brought to you by bandleader/bassist Kain Borlase who, with his 8 piece band brings you exciting arrangements from curious, far-away places. He includes obscurities from the exotica and surf genres, with compositions by Les Baxter, John Barry, John Sangster and Sven Libaek.

ADVENTURES IN PARADISE- Acclaimed slide guitar player Alex Burns’ musical island voyage. This rich feast harks back to Sol Hoopii, Chas E. King and King Bennie Nawahi, names redolent of lazy, swinging days in some tropical island paradise.
THE BLUEBOTTLES- Australia’s number one swinging instrumental combo deliver reverb drenched twang with a splash of Latin rhythm.

BARBARA BLAZE - Dancer, Jetsetter, discjockey and scintilating performer, Miss Blaze takes a break in her hectic cruise ship entertainment schedule to perform at TABOO.

KAHUNA DADDIES- With only the Kahunamatic Home Organ and a couple of rusty trumpets, Sweet Garry and The Chief entertain as many cocktail junkies as they can. Marvel how these island artistes switch from Bossa Nova to Swing to tell their salty tale with original tunes and some classic old lounge numbers.

BACHELOR KITCHEN DJ’S- Bring together the finest examples of exotica, Moog/Ham- mond, disco oddities, smooth easy listening, world psych and library/OST gems for your entertainment.

GOGO GODDESSES- The Luwow resident Goddesses twirl and sway on their skull be- decked alters throughout the night.

So dress up in your tropical best and join the Luwow crew for a cruise back to the heyday of South Pacific Cruises and backyard Tiki bars.
