Lucy Rose : Something’s Changing

On her latest effort Lucy Rose has found a balance. Debut album, Like I Used To featured subdued and exposed tracks, while its follow-up Work It Out took a more adventurous approach, utilising more drum machines and punchier bass. Here Something’s Changing sounds like a mixture of the two.

It’s clear from the very first, silvery harp sweep on Intro that Rose has taken a more mellow approach. Rose’s golden vibratos glisten and shimmer over a single guitar until strings sweep in on Is This Called Home. Folk trio The Staves feature on Floral Dresses. Unfortunately, as great as the performance is, the cameo goes mostly unnoticed as their part doesn’t particularly stand out.

Album highlight No Good At All seems to be the bridge between the fragile presentation of the debut and the peppy execution of the sophomore album. A frank and earnest dedication to someone who might be ‘the one’, Rose’s charm wafts over the bouncing drums and stabbing synth parts.
