OFWGKTA

Undoubtedly one of the most controversial new acts to emerge in 2011, the Twitter-happy mostly-teenage members who make up LA hip hop group OFWGKTA are nothing if not intriguing. They are heading to Australian Shores for the 2012 Big Day Out and also doing a sideshow at The Hi-Fi on Wednesday February 1. We have double passes to give away for the show. So what do you find so intriguing about them?

I like their fresh, energetic take on an old style of hip hop and also just how eclectic the whole OFWGKTA crew is. Tyler and Earl are obviously really talented guys as is Frank Ocean and Hodgy Beats just to name a few. And of course the controversy surrounding Earl's detention only added to their intrigue.

OFWGKTA jabbed an adrenaline-filled syringe into the heart of the music, art and media worlds. Their whole steeze is not giving a fuck what you think, which excites and intrigues me! They did it because they were doing the things that interested and entertained them with their friends, not to gain fame or notoriety. I think they are hilarious and talented as fuck, paying attention to them will do a million times more good for the general populace than bad! :)

I find that they are intriguing on multiple levels, but first of all, I for one can't even pronounce or understand the group's name. Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All? That in itself is intriguing enough!

ofwgkta started off as a bunch of teenagers who just made music "for the fuck of it" with their friends. the fresh beats and genius flows that resulted were true indicators of this. they don't take themselves too seriously; they don't give a fuck. the music speaks for itself

The fact that as a group they work so well and are all friends who live/eat/breathe/skate together.

OF intrigue me because they just don't give a shit about what anybody thinks and it's highly refreshing. They started with free downloads on their blog and worked their way up, they didn't fellate anybody to get to where they are now and I respect that. OF bring back what music is all about - having fun and sharing what you love with others. Also, Tyler is incredibly hot.

To intrigue is to arouse curiosity. OFWGKTA succeed by responding to the evil inside all people. Dark beats. Fluid lyricism. Rhythms that stretch beyond software and street cred. Teenage abandon and reckless rhymes. Masking their ignorance with bravado and abstraction. I imagine their energy, their psychosis on stage.

To intrigue is to secretly plan something illicit or detrimental. Or both. Video and audio do nothing to emulate the possibilities of experience. I've heard mention of their shows shifting internal states; of what hip hop is and does. I imagine standing before them, below them, waiting with faceless strangers. Of participating in the above. All of this is what I expect from their live show. All of this is what I hope for and want. But I will never know. If I don’t win these tickets.

It's unconventional hip-hop! They've moved away from the rampant, unapologetic flossing, egos and materialism.
