One of the standout films from last year’s MIFF, Norwegian Wood showcases a multitude of Japanese talent on the rise. Adapted from the bestselling novel from Japanese author Haruki Murakami, the film has raked in worldwide critical acclaim. We have copies of the film on DVD, plus the excellent Johnny Greenwood-penned soundtrack, and if that’s not enough, we have copies of Murakami’s latest work 1Q84. Haruki is the king. Reading his books has a strange calming effect similiar to those experienced from half assed meditation or disjointed pain. His prose and use of language is amazing considering some of it is often lost in translation. Wind up bird cronicle and kafka on the shore are two of his more amazing books. I could copy his stats from wiki but that would be cheating, but I know this much, he is Japanese and enjoys wearing pants.

Haruki is Japanese but has spent time in various other countries that have most likley influenced his novels and short stories. He runs marathons and loves Jazz. Perhaps he's extremely introverted, but he doesn't seem to be a particularly happy chap, barely a smile in photos. We sort of have something in common - apparently he's not very good at playing Mahjong and neither am I (actually, I suck)

I know that anyone who is a foreigner to Japan carries a murakami book in their backpack. I did and the cute American boy I met was halfway through the elephant vanishes. I can also say that murakamis books are mysterious and beautiful and not easy to forget.

Haruki Murakami owns a house across the road from me. Whenever he's in Melbourne, we hang out as much as our schedules will allow. Although shy at first, he's a friendly, consistently hilarious guy. He's a strict vegan, which limits the restaurants we can eat at. However, he's an excellent wingman after a couple of drinks, which more than makes up for it. His stories of amusing predicaments in the torture hostels of eastern Europe keep ladies enthralled. In conclusion, his favourite show is The Big Bang Theory. Also he's a Pisces.

He is fascinated by numbers, so here goes: 12 novels, 23 tweets, 503,000 facebook fans, his books are translated into 44 languages, 63 years old, sixth recipient of the Franz Kafka Prize, 24.95 is the RRP of 1Q84. 73% rotten tomatoes score for Norwegian Wood and he is 100% surreal.

He sings in the shower, always puts his socks on before his trousers and sometimes forgets to floss after a late night out. Now you wouldn't have found those tidbits out on wikipedia !
