Sustainable living and farm-to-fork produce at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo

Farm fresh.

This year marks Seymour’s 26th annual Alternative Farming Expo. The Expo runs from Friday February 16 to Sunday February 18 at Kings Park and brings together the newest and latest ideas in farming. The expo features just under 500 exhibitors and over 20,000 visitors over the three days. Seymour’s expo features display stands, demonstrations, informative lectures, market shopping, food and liquor tastings plus live entertainment too.

The Backyard Warriors section of the expo includes demonstrations of backyard sustainability with shows on raising chickens, backyard beekeeping and fishing.

“If you are looking for advice on alternative products or want to tap into the latest innovative ideas that will assist you in being a successful farmer, then the expo is the place to visit,” said events manager Susie Filleti. “There is a real festival feel this year too, with three busy food courts and a bar, and all palates are catered for with the range of delicious food, wine and cider on offer."

The Farm to Fork aspect of the expo will have food connoisseurs covered. The insect farm from Western Australia specialises in farming crickets for both human and animal consumption. If you’re not a fan of insects there’s a butcher shop showing the traditional art of butchery and how to make salami and sausages.

Plus, there are other cooking demonstrations around the expo, local fresh produce from local vendors and fresh pasta from Italian chefs. In terms of alcoholic drinks, there’s stalls for both Original Spirit Co and Prickly Moses.

For your entertainment, there’s the AWPA Victorian Whip-cracking and Australian Bullock Whip Championships plus pig racing and pig diving and the Flipping Disc Dogz performing stunts. There are extra activities for children this year, with DIY projects, camel rides, an animal petting farm and plenty of animals to see.

The Seymour Alternative Farming Expo takes place at Kings Park in Seymour from Friday February 16 until Sunday February 18, tickets available from the Expo's website.
