Meredith Music Festival 2012 Rumour Roundup

Let’s take a look at who could very well be hitting the Supernatural Amphitheatre this year to complement the smells with sound.

Royal Headache last graced the Supernatural Amphitheatre at the 2010 Golden Plains. Suffice to say, a lot has happened since then. They proved worthy of a primetime festival slot at this year’s Boogie, and are set to hit our biggest arenas with The Black Keys at the end of the year.

No stranger to our shores, Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, is gearing up to release her first original studio albumsince 2006. Good as reason as any for her to visit for a splendid late-arvo Supernatural appearance.

While Sydney’s garage kings are more likely to appear, we’re wishin’ and a hopin’ that this could be the year that Eddy Current Suppression Ring mark a triumphant return to the festival they vehemently owned in 2009.

Calls for someone to bring over Pissed Jeans have gone unheeded for many years, but we’re hoping the time is right for the band to hit Meredith.

As you’ve probably noticed, the weather is a bit shit at the moment – leaving meteorologists baffled. Could it be Melbourne has gone too long without a visit from surefire heat-bringer Donny Benet? What better way to kick off summer than with Meredith being given the touch.

While a Neutral Milk Hotel reunion will probably never happen, we can cross our fingers for a set from Jeff Mangum.

After an aborted tour at the start of the year, it makes sense that Action Bronson would return to fill the role of Meredith’s hip hop component.

While there were a few shaky technical problems with Kirin J Callinan‘s full band appearance at The Tote last week, we have good faith a Meredith set would be nothing short of phenomenal. It would be Kirin’s second appearance at the Amphitheatre for 2012 after gracing the stage with Lost Animal, and a cameo as a backup dancer for Chic at Golden Plains.

Meredith is quite fond of crossover pop acts – think Sia and Ladyhawke. This year Catcall more than fits the bill. But has her debut The Warmest Place done enough to warrant an appearance at the festival? We rate the chances at around 4.3.

It’s been a long time coming, but Melbourne darlings Twerps are well past due for a Meredith stint. The band earned praise touring the States with Golden Plains attendees Real Estate, and would make for a triumphant debut at the Supernatural Amphitheatre.

Forces are capable of blowing minds in the early AM. And what better place to do so than in the haunting surrounds of the Supernatural Amphitheatre? While we’re at it, Meredith veterans My Disco probably couldn’t smoke out the outdoors like they can The Toff, but shit, we’d love to see them try.

With the announcement of their forthcoming album Centipede Hz, Baltimore freak-folkers Animal Collective could receive the rare call up for a second Meredith appearance following their 2009 showing. Tanlines would prove a perfect fit for a breezy Saturday afternoon, whilst Lightning Bolt would be a fuckin’ great way to wake up a dreary crowd.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor have toured intermittently since their 2003 hiatus, most recently appearing at this year’s Coachella and whilst we can keep dreaming for My Bloody Valentine – word has it that the group will never grace an Australian festival.

Stay tuned to Beat for the official announcement in the coming weeks.
