The Runaways

Starring Twilight’s Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, The Runaways is an empowering tale of five teenage girls who set off to prove that serious rock ‘n’ roll isn’t an exclusive boys-only club.

Based on the relationship between Joan Jett (Stewart) and Cherie Currie (Fanning), the film charts the meteoric rise of band The Runaways in 1975, their wild life on the road, as well as the band’s eventual demise three years and five albums later.

To win one of ten double passes to see The Runaways, which opens nationally on Thursday July 15, tell us in the comments box below what your favourite girl (em)power(ing) film is and why.

Oh that's easy- Tarantino's Death Proof. It's a great movie, super violent, cool action sequences and the dialogue is razor sharp. Also, the 20 minute car chase with a chick on the bonnet ? Hells yeah.

Tootsie - Nothing empowers you more as a woman than a man dressed up as a woman being able to convince everyone he is a woman... Mrs Doubtfire comes in a close 2nd.

Kill Bill, a chick who can kill is pretty much (em)power(ing) in my opinion

'Million Dollar Baby' (2004) Girl overpowering others in the boxing ring. Four Academy Awards, including one for Best Picture can't be wrong.

"Alien" - Launched a franchise of movies with a woman as the central/strongest character surrounded by men falling by the wayside. "Reform School Girls" also gets a nod for its virtually all female cast.

The first thing that comes to mind when I hear "Girl Power" is the Spice Girls, and their film Spiceworld. This is a story which follows five strong women (the Spice Girls) in their struggle to overthrow the patriarchy (their domineering management and a Kerry Packer-esque media mogul) whilst maintaining tongue firmly in cheek. This is a highly underrated film which uses short skirts and purposely crappy special effects to cleverly disguise the modern female struggle in a male-dominated world.

I would have to say something geeky like Mona Lisa Smiles. That classic story line of women breaking the feminine code and becoming who they want to be rather than who society THINKS they should be.
Second up would be Erin Brokovich. "They're called boobs Ed". Amazing movie and true story - does it get better than that?

Kick-Ass. Emphasising the 'girl' in 'girl power', an 8-year-old girl named Mindy kills pretty much the entire mafia by herself. If you tell your daughter not to interpret it literally, it's a great message.

The Descent. This horror flick smashed gender role conventions and represented it's women with compelling grit and determination.

A Woman Under the Influence (1974); it's a film by John Cassavetes which portrays the suppressed freedom of such a strong female essence. Everybody in the movie finds her nature, unnatural and just plain crazy - when in fact it is just who she is; a fierce, eccentric and very loving mother and wife. This woman's restrictions and suppression influences me as a woman to stand up for my own individuality and to not take crap of what is expected of me as a female.
