World Without Men is the name of the brand new release from Jessica Says.
The classically-trained cellist is launching the single on Thursday December 16 at Melbourne’s The Toff In Town, and is also supporting singer-songwriter Sally Seltmann at Brisbane’s The Zoo in Fortitude Valley on Saturday December 4, and the Great Northern in Byron Bay on Sunday December 5.
Earlier this year, Says’ plans to perform and record new material were derailed by a fall from a window which left her unable to walk for several months. World Without Men sees her emerge from this period of contemplation and isolation with a newfound boldness.
Recorded by Matt Voigt (Cat Power, Oh Mercy) at Sing Sing, World Without Men marries Says’ delicate vocal melodies and lush string arrangements with ghostly synths and a thunderous drum track programmed by Rhys Richards of Melbourne next-big-things World’s End Press.
The track also features Says’ long time collaborator Geoffrey O’Connor on guitar.
The song is accompanied by a striking video directed by Daniela Velickovic, shot in the ballroom of a Victorian mansion in St Kilda and starring an enormous white parachute and a radioactive pink cello bow.
The B-Side Jocelyn is a tender piano ballad chronicling a troubled friendship, featuring Pete Luscombe (Paul Kelly, The Black Sorrows) on drums, and a soaring violin solo by Says’ younger brother and bandmate Nicholas.
