Hoo Haa Dinner Review

It is seldom that I would ever venture to a restaurant without doing a bit of research. Under normal circumstances, I would read a few online reviews, or at least, I would have a recommendation from someone whose opinion I trust. But this time, I have to admit, I knew very little about my destination, and just like a blind date, I was without any expectations. By the end of the evening, I was already lining up my second date.

As I am shown to my table, I am able to get a grasp of just how surprisingly spacious the place is. From the street, it looks slight, barely capable of hosting more than 50 people, but when you get to the top of the stairs it is a Tardis. As you enter, there is a welcoming seating area, which draws the eye to the beautiful panoramic bar which dominates the room. The mood is comfortable; low lit and inviting, and the music is at a level that can fill silences, but is not so intrusive as to cause irritation. As first impressions go, it is safe to say I am on board.

Hoo haa is for all intents and purposes, an Italian restaurant, but it manages to stay away from the stereotypical pasta and pizza fare which is so common in Melbourne. Although I did sample such Italian staples as Arancini and Gnocchi (both of which were excellent), the standout dish was the wet roasted lamb shoulder, which was beautifully cooked, and perfectly accompanied by a Parmesan and white wine set polenta. Although the food is relatively high brow, they still offer some old favourites, and as Wednesday night is Super Parma night, I duly agree to take the challenge. As with some of the other choices on the menu, this is an old favourite, but it is a real step above the norm.

My only real criticism would be that the menu is limited, but what is here is well thought out, and creative. If you turn up expecting a Hawaiian pizza, or a lasagne, then you may be disappointed. It is also worth remembering that Hoo haa is primarily a bar, and the food element has been added at a later date. We also had the pleasure of trying four of the cocktails, all of which proved to be excellent.

To close proceedings I took a punt, and under the advisement of our excellent waitress, I sampled the Scotch and chocolate matching course. I have to admit that I am not the biggest fan of Scotch, but it was a nice touch at the end of what was a beautiful meal. Hoo haa is a wonderful restaurant, and despite its unassuming demeanour from street level, the opulent surroundings and delicious food and cocktails make this the perfect venue for all occasions.
