Happy High Herbs Stalls Rejected From Festivals

It has been an interesting 18 months for Happy High Herbs. As many fans know, they’ve had a strong and vibrant presence at most of the music festivals around Australia for many years now. However, much to our great disappointment, the larger of these festivals started refusing their market stall applications.

The first of these was Woodford, which was a huge blow, as this is where they started getting the word out and making their presence felt almost ten years ago! Hot on the heels of our Woodford disappointment was the great sadness we felt when the another Australia-wide festival followed suit.

The strangest thing about these refusals is that no reason was given. Many of the store’s loyal customers complained to the festival organisers to no avail. They also had numerous reports that due to their absence, and the absence of the safe, legal, 'soft' alternatives to harder drugs that they provide, there were more incidences of drug overdose, alcohol poisoning and related problems than usual.

Feeling fed up with this treatment, one of their trusty marketeers decided she wanted to get to the bottom of the mystery: why would all these festivals, who had supported us for so long, point-blank refuse us with no explanation? After speaking to the organisers of the market spaces at a number of these festivals, she came up with this:

“Basically the organisers of [some major festivals] (and others of the same school of thought) don't want to be associated with promoting or backing any kind of "high". The reason for this is that if something adverse were to happen, the festival organisers will be accountable to a large extent as they endorsed the "high" in the first place by having a "high" market stall present. So, because of this, there are a number of festivals that will no longer allow any businesses promoting any kind of high into their festival. It becomes a "legal thing" now because it is in their contract.”

But really, Happy High Herbs have been around for a very long time and have always been seen and welcomed as a safe alternative for festival-goers, reducing the amount of harm that is usually inflicted upon them through illegal drug and alcohol abuse. What's more, it doesn't really make sense then to have the presence of energy drinks such as Red Bull, V, Monster and Mother at these events as they are also promoting an "energy high" and can be rather dangerous when people start to consume in excess of two, three, four cans, especially when they are mixing these with alcohol.

Apparently, it is the word "High" in the store’s name that is what is now making it a legal matter with us entering most festivals. Even the word "Happy" is implying a sort of high (…go figure). The market and festival coordinators the detective marketeer spoke to assured HHH that they were on "their side" and believe that what they do is an amazing thing.

The advice that they did offer as far as being able to re-enter these festivals is to possibly go through another name change and actively demonstrate that their products do authentically provide a source of harm reduction and are a healthy and safe alternative to illegal drugs (and even alcohol). Ironically, this is what they are already doing!

They’ve completely revised the selection of products offered at festivals where alcohol is also available for purchase. While their strongest party highs are extremely fun, they can cause adverse reactions in people who have been drinking or are dehydrated. In the interest of everybody having a good time, Happy High Herbs have taken these ones off the festival menu, and instead are offering the wonderful Ignites and Super-Gs. Both of these are full of herbal extracts like chocolate and ginseng, which create feelings of bliss and energy, while supporting the body systems. Products like this never have adverse reactions with alcohol or other drugs! This is part of our strategy to demonstrate that we are here to help create a healthier festival environment.

What is most concerning is that this morning, in a service station, there was a school boy in front of me who couldn't have been more than 13 years old... buying two 500ml cans of the energy drink Mother! As a nation, we're allowing minors to purchase a LITRE of energy drinks that contain the maximum dose of caffeine (as well as strong amino-acids and neurotransmitters) for an adult in one can! The kid was buying two cans!

Yet we turn an absolute blind eye to this, not even the mildest bit concerned about the implications this has on the health of a minor... Not to mention that there is a huge potential here of setting up this boy's (and all other minors that drink this hardcore stuff) biochemical feedback system to crave and desire harder and harder substances for more of an energetic boost, potentially leading to harder addictions such as amphetamines as he grows up.

What a crazy world we live in where watching something like this is not only absolutely legal, but not even noticed, and yet providing the public with healthy, and quality herbs that have helped many, many people kick their addictions and have allowed people to have a good time without the anxiety or come down is being frowned upon.

Crazy! What do you think? What’s your stance on drugs use at festivals, and have you ever used herbal alternatives? What did you think? Is it better to drink? Are you concerned about your health in terms of drug and alcohol use? Should Happy High Herbs be at your favourite festival? Leave us a comment and let us know.

Ive had 2 quite dangerous experinces after taking herbs from their stalls, there was no pre warning on dosage and side effects from the people working at the stalls a bit more info on the products and their effects would be helpful

I had their weird lollypop things once. Didn't do anything, tasted like shite. Total waste of money, despite spending about 40 minutes talking to the girl working in the store trying to get some useful info out of her.

@ M.I - totally agree that the common mentality that "natural" = safe is very dangerous and naive.

I think it's wonderful to have alternatives, as people are always going to take drugs in this world! And in my experience, HHH Staff are really good at giving the right warnings and advice. I ve had great times with Happy Herbs Products!

I have tried a , shall we say, a large and diverse selection of HHH products, and although some have only had minor effects, this has been what they were meant to do. I have never experienced an adverse reaction, only what I have expected and what the packet or staff have told me to expect.

yeah Dave both times i have had products from their stalls I have nearly ended up in hospital, not fun at all

I tried BUZZ. No real indication of what it did apart from the name and what I was told by the staff at the shop. It cost $25 for a small vile. The women told me I should take half and wait and then take the rest if needed.

I took half at about 8pm on a friday mixed with Cola though I could have taken it straight. It tasted nice kinda like Honey. I felt a tingling come on quite quick but it faded almost just as quick. I waited about 40 mins and took the rest. I also had a few tokes on a joint that was going around. It was between 9:30-10pm by this stage. I noticed a tingling feeling at the back of my head and a slight feeling of anxiousness. I continued on and stopped smoking pot. I could feel a level of calm, but nothing a regular or semi user, one would consider being anything of interest.

I left the party at about 11pm. When I got home I smoked a bit more. The feeling had defintly changed by this stage. I was feeling a bit agitated and decided to watch television. I ended up staying awake until about 3am. Although I was extremly tired I couldn't really switch off, my body felt like it had definitely been abused but my head was clearer that "normal" I guess you would say.

I felt the after effects for the next few days, I was extremely tired and laggy. I felt like for a couple of days. My mind was a bit cluttered for about 7 days after this. There was a noticeable difference which I felt was pretty unwarranted considering the actual high was fairly low.

Overall I think BUZZ is over priced @ $25 and the come down is worse that the high. Most users will warrant the mid week blues for a fuckin good MD pill. There was a slight MDxx feeling with this stuff but generally it just wanted me to take more. Given the right circumstances I would take 3-4 viles of the stuff.

On another note, the US are making the "Legal Incense" aka legal herb illegal at the moment because of the stuff that's put in it. I did a bit of reading and it really does appear you would be better off smoking real weed instead of shit conncoted in a lab.

Surely the festivals ought to be entertaining and enjoyable enough without the need for additional 'happiness'. Perhaps the festival organisers are just so sure of the quality of their performers that they do not feel their patrons require such products in order to have a good time.

HHH offer a great range of alternatives for festival goers to not only illicit drugs but also to alcohol and high-caffeine energy drinks. Thousands of people have used and enjoyed the products at many festivals across Oz and it is criminal that HHH are being forced out by companies selling energy drinks and alcohol. The ridiculousness of organisers saying that they don't want to be associated with people feeling happy or high at their festivals is beyond comprehension - why the hell are you organising a festival? Oh right...to make money. Woodford, Splendour and the other festivals following suit have lost their credibility by selling out to corporate greed and demand.

As for effects of HHH products, the massive majority of people who take the products enjoy the effects. Speak to a staff member about what you are wanting and how you should take it and they will give you honest, good advice. If you ignore their advice and do something such as take 5x the dose or drink a heap of booze then you may well have adverse reactions. Of course, if you want the effects of MDMA or some other illegal drug, maybe you should just go and find the drug and have all of the associated risks that go with that. HHH are not claiming to sell the illicit products - they are offering alternatives.

I have had vast experience with many, many substances and have also taken lots of HHH products. I've never had an adverse reaction to HHH and have always found they provide the described effects. If you can't notice the effects of HHH party products then I would suggest you need to seek help as you are well and truly out of touch with your body and mind.

Its also worth noting (for all you hardcore illicit-drug-purists) that HHH does not only sell legal alternatives but is also one of the leading supporters of herb and drug-law reform and, if you look into it, you may discover that many of the views of the company may align with your own. So many people are quick to be derisive but very slow to offer any positive, productive input of their own.

Love the herbs!

I feel that these positive natural alternatives are far superior than anything an energy drink can offer. They also help people with addiction or even to get there dreams back! Its about knowledge and with HHH you always no what you are getting, its regulated and the people are freindly and healthy and you no what you are getting. I would choose them over an energy drink or drugs any day of the week!..... Maybe tonight??........

Herbal stimulants ARE NOT regulated at all. The FACT is that because these DRUGS aren't regulated they have differing effects for different users. It is NOT the responsibility of a Festival or Party organiser to ensure attendees have ample stimulants and nor should it be. That would just open the flood gates for liabilities and insurance companies would have a field day.

Organisers can happily provide legal drinks because they are legal and safe. Sure people get to drunk but the effects are well known and can be treated. The effects of legal highs are not known and also can't be treated on that basis.

This article is MISLEADING to say the least. If you don't want someone at your house you don't need to give them a reason, you just tell them to fuck off and leave it at that.

If attendees want to get a so called legal high so bad then they should purchase it before arriving like most other people these days.

This herbal high shit is just cash grab.

But it is good that people are researching and finding alternatives so that maybe one day they will be just as excepted as alcohol but with a more positive and healthy outcome?

Posted by rudi on January 6, 2011 @ 10:38pm

There are many different herbs and products available at HHH, and many with positive effects, so I think it very unfair to blanketly critisize them. I am a great believer in plant lore and their use as an alternative to corporate/chemical products and I respect that HHH has had the courage to make this available to the public. I feel it is a shame that they are banned from festivals, and as an event organizer myself, we come under great pressure from community groups and elders regarding stalls such as HHH. But where there isn't such pressure, I will gladly have Happy Herbal Highs at any of my events.

You say "organisers can happily provide legal drinks because they are legal and SAFE" I assume you aren't talking about Mother / Red Bull / V etc which has been proven to be harmful in high doses... and last time I checked everything that HHH sells is legal - unregulated maybe - but legal. Meaning your point is mute.

They're not scientists, they have no idea what long term effects of their products will be. What happens when people who have used their so called legal highs, get liver damage which is only picked up in 20 years time?

Posted by Anonymous on January 8, 2011 @ 5:26pm

Unlike people who drink alcohol not to mention combine it with redbull. Im sure their liver will be like gold after 20 years of abuse.
