Vampire Weekend

I’m speaking with Vampire Weekend multi-instrumentalist Rostam Batmanglij as he enjoys a relative respite, relishing a “chill week” in his Brooklyn apartment before the promotional storm that accompanies the ceremony that is an album’s release. That’s not to say the madness hasn’t already begun to transpire. The band purportedly raised the ire of car enthusiasts with a slow motion lyric clip... Read More
Vampire Weekend : Ya Hey

It’s right there in the title. On the surface, it’s a switch up of one of the best pop tracks of the last decade. But put in the context of the biblical explorations contained within the track, it’s a play on Yahweh, the ancient name of the lord. It’s Ezra Koenig’s greatest showing as a lyricist, achieving an impossible mesh of millennia-old culture and modern pop culture shoutouts to The... Read More
Vampire Weekend : Diane Young / Step

Diane Young, the first of two singles from Modern Vampires Of The City (out Friday May 3) is pounding, skittish and bursting with fruit flavour. Two amazing things happen at the end – a little skatman vocal break down and a massive explosion of pure anarchic joy. I have never loved Vampire Weekend as much as I do this very second. Gold stars, all around.   Step, the second of two... Read More

It’s been relatively quiet on the Vampire Weekend front since the 2010 release of Contra – the band’s well-received follow-up to their breakthrough debut. Anticipation has been steadily building for the outfit’s third album, with the first taste coming in the form of Unbelievers, which the band debuted on Jimmy Kimmel Live replete with skeletal Halloween makeup. Chances... Read More

Ahem. AHEM. Is this thing on? Oh! Very good then. Well, here we go. The biggest name on the Australian festival calendar, the Big Day Out, has finally revealed their lineup for 2013. The 2013 Big Day Out, which marks the festival's 21st birthday, will be the first Australian event since the introduction of the Big Day Out's partnership with C3 - the promoters responsible for Lollapalooza,... 60 Seconds With... Young Maverick

So then, what’s the band name and what do you ‘do’ in the band? The band is called Young Maverick, my name is Will, and I play Drums.   What do you think people will say you sound like? We get some Vampire Weekend references, but I don’t really see that too much. We’ve branded our style as ‘Holiday Pop’, so hopefully that catches on.   What is “Holiday Pop”? It’s pretty much exactly... Read More
Little Red : Get A Life

The opening track from Little Red's long player Midnight Remember sounds like Phoenix. The band has long since abandoned its twee sixties rock and roll aesthetic and embraced, in this post-Animal Collective and Vampire Weekend world, a swinging, glittery synth pop style. The song is alright, as far as that goes, a soft, romantic disco glazer, but god…their shameless, lyrebird-like appropriation... Read More
Hungary Kids of Hungary : Scattered Diamonds

Ditto, maybe skewing towards Vampire Weekend. A forgettable song, made with someone else’s sound. Boring. Horribly fucking boring and obvious. Naturally, they’re on a major label. Read More
Hungry Kids of Hungary : Escapades

It certainly doesn’t seem like almost three years ago when these ‘kids’ first appeared on the scene. Despite its long gestation period, the impression has always been that Hungry Kids Of Hungary’s first full-length record was always just around the corner, thanks to the consistent buzz the band have generated through hefty touring. They’ve quickly become a staple of... Read More
