Core- April 25 Dear Inexperienced Security Staffers Assigned to Various Venues When Bands of the Punk/Hardcore Persuasion Are Headlining, I hope this letter finds you well, and that it does not long distract you from lifting heavy things before your beaming reflection. I would like to suggest a couple points of basic etiquette that are expected from you at a show. Though a security expert I may... Read More

It's been a whirlwind year for the songstress that has seen her record with Jack White and release her new album to critical praise. These shows are sure to be huge so... Read More

Punk, Ska, Hardcore news reviews and gossip. With Emily Kelly ek1984@gmail.com Yeah so no one really breaks up anymore do they? Refused seem to have open the floodgates for band that swore never to return, to reform in triumphant fashion. Good Riddance announced a reformation last week and while it’s a welcome one I can’t help but roll your eyes at this shit. I remember the sadness with... Read More

So last week was a bit epic, what with Big Day Out and then all the ensuing sideshows. I acted like a most mature adult and ditched the whole festival thing and bee-lined straight to the Sidney Myer Music Bowl sideshows. My wallet still hates me for it. So Mariachi El Bronx were excellent on Monday night but they weren’t quite The Bronx, ya know? And then I was finally one of the lucky... Read More

Being unwell, as anyone knows, is a pain in the arse. Suffering from ongoing illness is truly some next level shit.  Melbourne’s Genny B – RRR regular and Livewire co-host, guitarist of Your Wedding Night and The Bites – has been in the trenches for the past year battling with an aggressive cancer, and the experience has left her working overtime just to cover her rent in between her...   Undercolours staged a flaccid, unadventurous set, effectively typifying the fate of your average support act - that is to say, while there was nothing truly objectionable about the band, that may have been the problem precisely. Undercolours’ complacent Triple M rock repertoire failed to pack much of a punch, any lasting impressions eluding the Corner crowd. Their set, while accomplished... Read More

Well well well. Look what we have here. A Refused reunion . For years now I’ve been hearing rumours about the substantial sums of money Coachella have been offering similar seminal bands to forget their past indiscretions and reform for the festival. Apparently with each new year the offers become more and more generous, making it harder and harder for bands to resist the urge. At The... Read More

The Smith Street Band – No One Gets Lost Anymore – Happily one of the best Aussie albums in recent memory. Also one of the best live bands doing the rounds. Go see ‘em. Hey Rosetta! – Seeds –... " The music scene in the '90s, particularly in Melbourne, was happening and alive," says Vincent Giarrusso, "It was good to be part of it." His band, Underground Lovers, were a seminal Australian dream pop act of the 1990s that had a fitful kind of success. They were critical darlings with a devoted fanbase. They won an ARIA, Best New Artist, for their self-titled 1991 debut, and signed a... Read More

Being a support act is not the easiest gig in music, so to speak. Openers often play to a limited crowd and battle chatter from an audience who just want them to hurry up and finish. Occasionally though, you see a warm up act who defies all those elements and makes you glad you showed up early. Tin Can Radio, support for Tijuana Cartel’s album launch at the Corner Hotel on Friday night, is one of... Read More

Hall & Oates are set to touch down on Australian shores throughout February next year. Someone should probably get John and Daz on the phone and tell them not to bother, as Melbourne's The Vaudeville Smash have just set the yacht-rock bar impossibly high - yes, even too high for the reigning progenitors themselves. The curtains parted to reveal a sole keyboardist, crooning a cryptically... Read More

San Fran Disco have been gigging for about 18 months now, but we started writing a long time before that. We were originally a 3 piece, without a drummer or a bass player. We recorded our first E.P with session drum and bass. Things sure have gotten better since we became a 5 piece. One of our favourite gigs was supporting Bluejuice at the Corner Hotel in Richmond. We had come off a really bad... Read More

Weddings, Parties, Anything have proudly worn a guernsey for their home city for almost 30 years. Their energetic live shows and passion for Melbourne's suburban and cultural identity have engaged two generations of patriotic Victorians. After playing a handful of shows since their 1998 break-up, it's appropriate that the Weddoes' semi-retirement has involved a yearly Grand Final Eve Spectacular... Read More

Brokencyde, largely believed to be one of the biggest musical abortions of all time, have announced their first ever tour to Australia this October. It'd bring tears to my eyes were it not so genuinely fascinating how... Read More

Winter gives me the absolute shits. It makes everyone and everything at least 60% more miserable. But this year I've found a few things that are making the season a little more bearable. 1) Smith Street's Gasometer hotel is now fully functional and hosting bands. It also has buffalo wings on it's menu, open fire places everywhere and they play a lot of Wu Tang. HOME.   2) Make Do And Mend'... Read More

We Say Bamboulee, a surf rock three-piece from the Blue Mountains, are ace. Their energy, enthusiasm and fun, danceable music was a good choice for The Jezabels’ support slot as they definitely got the evening off to a rolling start. Northeast Party House and Yeo did a great job of warming up the dancefloor, in particular the latter’s ability to transform the one-man DIY Prince act of his solo recordings to a full band, complete with scintillating keytar skills. But nothing could quite prepare for the finely honed soul-come-funk-pop assault of Kimbra and her whipcrack-tight band. From the moment she launches onstage, bedecked... Read More

Several candle-lit tables were set up inside The Corner’s band room, providing an elegant accompaniment to Oliver Mann’s affecting set. Oliver’s rich baritone is a profound and haunting instrument in itself. It comes as no surprise to find that Oliver also sings opera – there was one particular moment in which his voice climbed its way from barely a whisper into a potent sky-scraping force,... Read More
