Pet Shop Boys : Leaving
0 Comments. 289 Views. Posted 31 Oct 2012 @ 1:59pm.
A very understated disco pop tune from the yet-forthcoming Pet Shop Boys album, Elysium. Leaving has a surprisingly hypnotic quality; a silken ripple effect that ushers away a super-camp Kylie Minogue-loving army of gayness that would otherwise consume this single. (For the record, I have no issue with a super camp army of gayness, I just don’t like Kylie Minogue.) Read More
Pet Shop Boys : Winner
0 Comments. 502 Views. Posted 18 Jul 2012 @ 12:13pm.
Winner is Pet Shop Boys at their most saccharine or most deeply ironic, it’s hard to say. The lyrics are sincere as shit, ready-pressed for the 2012 Olympics (“It’s been a long time coming, we’ve been in the running for so long, but now we’re on our way…you’re a winner, I’m a winner, this is all happening so fast”) but it’s hard to believe they mean it. Surely there is some arch undertone here?... Read More
Kate Miller-Heidke : Nightflight

Believe it or not, Nightflight is actually Kate Miller-Heidke’s first solo album in three years. The success of its predecessor, Curiouser, rippled so triumphantly for so long, it’s as if Miller-Heidke never withdrew from the limelight. Nevertheless, she’s back, presenting a satisfying return to form.   Buoyant opener Ride This Feeling offers an electrifying first impression, bristling with... Read More

One of our fair country's most dynamic talents has announced a swift return to Melbourne, this time performing in a very intimate surrounding.   Currently based in New York, Daniel took the world by storm with the release of his Mark Ronson-produced debut album, Love & War, in 2009. The album went Platinum in the UK and earned him an ARIA Award, as well as a reputation as one of the... Read More

I’ll come right out and admit it. As a child of the halcyon days of the ‘80s, nothing – nothing – floats my boat more than skillfully employed and emotive synth-pop. From the explosion of JG Ballard-inspired post-punk of Throbbing Gristle, Human League and Cabaret Voltaire to the post-industrial electro-pop purveyed by luminaries Depeche Mode, New Order and Erasure, the ‘80s were...   Speaking from his hotel in Turin at The Big Snow – a snowboarding festival where he is playing – Zomboy explains that he is working on new music and looking out onto one of the most amazing views he’s ever experienced. “In fact, let me take a picture so you can see,” he says. Before I know it, there is a picturesque snow covered chateau with beautiful tinges of green and brown in my inbox... Read More

Voltaire Twins : Romulus EP
0 Comments. 1,366 Views. Posted 19 Jan 2012 @ 12:30pm.
They’re hardly the new kids on the block, but Romulus may well be your introduction to Perth’s Voltaire Twins. Jaymes and Tegan’s androgynous looks and dark electro beats suggest something along the lines of The Knife, but this is fairly straightforward new wave pop (plus, er, they’re actually a quartet). While their music is hardly ground-breaking, it’s so confident in its sound, grounded with... Read More
VHS Or Beta : Diamonds And Death

VHS Or Beta have always had the feel of plucky underdogs about them. Their 2004 debut, Night On Fire, was a near-perfect revival of moody '80s new wave pop, but unfortunately for them a certain album called Hot Fuss came out that same year. Thus The Killers' became the world's premier skinny tie rockers, and VHS Or Beta found themselves stuck in support slots - opening for Duran Duran is cool... Read More
Rat Vs Possum

In that sea of naked bodies you find on Rat Vs Possum's new album artwork, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Matt Kulesza claims it's his legs that stand out the most. "They're pretty hairy!" he laughs, "and we're all covered in baby oil…" And if the mixture of friends and band members depicted in their birthday suits on the cover of Let Music & Bodies Unite weren't comfortable with... Single Of The Week - Death Cab For a Cutie : Home Is A Fire

Ben and co ramp up the eighties electro fever on Home Is A Fire, the second single from the aptly named Codes and Keys. The chorus is a drifting wash of synth and esoteric vocals, offset by a driving drum ‘n’ bass beat. It’s pretty awesome. It sounds like The Pet Shop Boys, though slightly more melancholic. Read More

What's your name then? Oh. And the name of your band…   My name is Jessica and my 'band' is called Jessica Says.   And what do you do?   I write, sing, and play cello and piano/keyboards/synths.   When did you start doing that?   I started writing songs when I was sixteen, so it must be eight years. Forever.   Why did you start doing that?   Isn't... Read More

Ned Collette & Joe Talia : Long You Lie
0 Comments. 1,240 Views. Posted 19 Oct 2011 @ 12:41pm.
Long You Lie is the A-side of a 7-inch single coming out later this month, aptly described by his publicist as a funky, new wave stylistic adventure in the manner of Talking Heads. Electronic synth scales rub up against Spanish acoustic guitar notes and a slow-bubbling disco beat - an arch and slinky mix of music - while Ned sings in his deadpan, quasi-gothic way. Cold but clever. Read More

In 2011, it’s time to add his “favourite festival” to the above list as Cant hits the stages of this year’s Parklife while getting ready to release two brand new EPs. “I actually made the decision this year to cut back on gigs quite a lot,” he claims. “I wanted... What do you do with your evenings when the kids have flown the nest, there's nothing on telly and you happen to be Neil and Sharon Finn? You march up to the music room, pick up an instrument and form a new band, that's what. Pajama Club is worlds away from Neil's work in Split Enz and Crowded House. It's more danceable, more ethereal, looser and with more of a late-‘70s Bowie type feel. Yet for... Read More

Seth Troxler hates himself. And his biography captures it brilliantly - whether he is DJing in LA, Berlin, or Buenos Aires, his evening usually ends in a corner somewhere, his head in his hands, his hands running through his hair, his eyes staring at the ground and his conceptually-rich mind wondering why all of us, not just those in the world of house and techno, don't see it: his immeasurable... Miami Horror : Under the Milky Way

Synth posters Miami Horror have covered Under the Milky Way by The Church, to raise funds for an Indigenous arts foundation called Heaps Decent. They've added a disco beat and a few synth flourishes to this seminal new wave track - all kinds of wrong, to be honest, but for an indisputably good cause. Read More

While chatting with Rosie Dennis, it's easy to skip from Yoko Ono to weather, chemistry to art. Dennis is unaware she is making me supremely jealous as I shiver in rubbish Melbourne weather. "I'm just in a T-shirt and cardigan," she says, on the phone from Sydney. Meanwhile, one of the coldest mornings we've ever had in August has recently graced Melbourne's frosty doorsteps. It's electronic music with soul, not just something that sounds like a computer spat out. According to Above & Beyond's Jono Grant, it's possible to apply your songwriting skills to dance music and end up with something that simply sends shivers down the spine. For the British trio, in 2011 that comes in the form of second album Group Therapy. "Ah, no it's got nothing to do with actual... Read More

This Brisbane-based three-piece have something pretty different going on. There’s somewhat of an electronic vibe going on, but the overriding feel is catchy, occasionally driving alternative pop-rock. Touches of other bands can be detected in their sound, such as the Killers, MM9 and maybe someone like the Presets, but no one influence dominates. So the finished product is quite original overall... Read More
Bastille Day At Red Bennies

There are plenty of celebratory dates throughout each calendar year, but my mum's French so we only celebrate Bastille Day. Which actually turns out pretty good, since there's much to celebrate at Red Bennies on Friday July 15.   The Bastille Day Party will be bringing some heat from the European summer with a 'belle epoque' inspired Bastille Ball Day. The French-est band in Melbourne, jazz... Read More

Jaymz' Parklife Picks (music editor) This Parklife lineup is fucking great for one simple fact: Death From Above 1979.
