Best of Comedy Malaysia

Australians make fun of New Zealanders, Americans make fun of Canadians, the English make fun of the Scottish: this much I knew. But one thing I learned at the Best of Comedy Malaysia showcase was that the Malaysians make fun of the Singaporeans. Not that it was a problem for the audience, which by round of applause proved to be mostly Malaysian with a smattering of Aussies.   Some jokes... Read More
Justin Bieber : Boyfriend

Biebs does a lot of husky whispering in this paint by numbers, post-Timberlake boy pop single. No surprises here, just more emasculating lyrics that pander to insipid tween girl fantasy – "If I was your boyfriend/ I’d never let you go", etc etc. Although there is a line towards the beginning about that caught my attention: "Chillin’ by the fire while we eating fondue". Is fondue a popular... Read More
60 Seconds With... Bearded Gypsy Band

So then, what’s the band name and what do you ‘do’ in the band?  The band name is The Bearded Gypsy Band. We draw sounds and influences from around the world, and throw them together to create an eclectic sound.   Bearing the terrible clichéd nature of this question, what do you reckon people will say you sound like? People often have mixed responses, but in general I believe we... Read More
Conor Maynard : Can't Say No

I am interested in all the wrong things. I didn’t know what Nicola Roxon looked like until last week as I had confused her with former Victoria Police commissioner Christine Nixon (guess why). I read The Monthly and watch Insiders like a diligent little leftist, but I can’t make the finer details of the Australian political spectrum stick in my head. I just can’t. Wave a pubescent... As a youngster, I had scratched-up copies of Hairspray and Cry-Baby on VHS, and would watch them over and over again, drawn in by the humour, the colour and the outsized characters. I didn't realise until I was much older how subversive the films actually were, especially for comedies that were essentially products of the American mainstream, with big stars like Johnny Depp.... Is it just me, or are films steadily getting worse? In the past few months we’ve had shockers such as Just Go With It, Gnomeo and Juliet, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never (sorry, when did he have a chance to say never? “Look, Mum, if I’m not a superstar by thirteen and half, I’m calling it a day”), Sex And The City 2 and Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son.     Inevitably, with these... Justin Bieber: Never Say Never

Watching a movie about Justin Bieber is a lot like having sex with a fat yet confusingly attractive prostitute. You don’t want anyone to know you did it, and in the morning all the cheese in the fridge will be missing, but it won’t cost you much and somehow you’ll enjoy it. And it’s in 3D. However, all it took was one scene, a close-up of Justin Bieber swaying her glistening hair in slow motion,... Read More
Justin Bieber: Never Say Never

Canadian teenager Justin Bieber is something of a pop sensation – a self taught musical prodigy who launched his music career through the social networking site YouTube. From those beginnings he has, in a couple of short years, grown into an international star, selling millions of records. Never Say Never offers a rather superficial portrait of Bieber; there are not a lot of startling... Read More

So then, what’s your name and what do you ‘do’ in the band?   “Jack, I play drums in Let Me Down Jungleman with my best mates, Codes and Slips.”   Bearing the terrible clichéd nature of this question, what do you reckon people will say you sound like?   “People say we sound like bands we’ve never really heard which is cool, but I... Justin Bieber To Tour Australia

Ladies, calm yourselves. The Bierbertron is coming our way.   This is going to be hilarious just because of the ridiculous crowds and panic and mayhem that this little twerp will cause.   His multiplatinum hit album My World 2.0 has basically caned the carts in the US and caused mass hysteria around the globe.   His previous promo tour to Australia resulted in all kinds of crazy...
