While Biebz keeps fuckin’ up in the celeb spotlight, the stakes seem pretty low in terms of his musical output. It’s a conducive, in-between album flux, with the Journals collection late last year producing the goods while selling sweet fuck-all copies. On a similar creative mindset, Looking For You sees flow innovators Migos jump on the booming beat to strike gold. While performing...

“Justin”, “Bieber”. Two words, loaded with connotation, shorthand for all that is bad in music. A pop icon for the millennial masses. Philanthropist. Bucket-pissing, shitty-grafitti-purveying douche. Above all else, he’s a pop culture sensation - one of the biggest in recent memory.

I gave Believe, his most recent album, another run through in the day leading up to the...

Australians make fun of New Zealanders, Americans make fun of Canadians, the English make fun of the Scottish: this much I knew. But one thing I learned at the Best of Comedy Malaysia showcase was that the Malaysians make fun of the Singaporeans.

Not that it was a problem for the audience, which by round of applause proved to be mostly Malaysian with a smattering of Aussies....

Biebs does a lot of husky whispering in this paint by numbers, post-Timberlake boy pop single. No surprises here, just more emasculating lyrics that pander to insipid tween girl fantasy – "If I was your boyfriend/ I’d never let you go", etc etc. Although there is a line towards the beginning about that caught my attention: "Chillin’ by the fire while we eating fondue". Is fondue a...

So then, what’s the band name and what do you ‘do’ in the band?

The band name is The Bearded Gypsy Band. We draw sounds and influences from around the world, and throw them together to create an eclectic sound.

Bearing the terrible clichéd nature of this question, what do you reckon people will say you sound like?

People often have mixed responses, but...

I am interested in all the wrong things. I didn’t know what Nicola Roxon looked like until last week as I had confused her with former Victoria Police commissioner Christine Nixon (guess why). I read The Monthly and watch Insiders like a diligent little leftist, but I can’t make the finer details of the Australian political spectrum stick in my head. I...

As a youngster, I had scratched-up copies of Hairspray and Cry-Baby on VHS, and would watch them over and over again, drawn in by the humour, the colour and the outsized characters. I didn't realise until I was much older how subversive the films actually were, especially for comedies that were essentially products of the American mainstream, with big stars like Johnny Depp. When I put this to...
