Anthony Allayialis, the co-owner and man behind the concept of Eureka Rebellion Trading, first ignited his love affair for American food and condiments when he moved to North America in the early 2000s. He always had the idea of creating an all-in-one store with everything he loved and upon returning to Oz in 2011, he started getting the wheels in motion for ERT, adding his overseas inspiration... What do you think about Melbourne's restaurant scene? Melbourne's restaurant scene seems to be ever-evolving. Coming from Sydney it always amazes me at the diverse range of cultures and the influences that they have on the restaurant scene. I love venturing out to the city and trying people's new spin on [classic] dishes.   What's the concept behind the menu at Hoo Haa? Modern Australian... Read More
Blue Corn

Blue Corn is a great little Mexican cantina and bar in St Kilda. The place is all the more special for the location, nestled amongst expensive dives near the corner of Barkly and Acland, in the ominous shadow of the Dolton bar. I remember eating here when it opened years ago and being intimidated by the prices. Paying $20 for a burrito seemed ridiculous, but that was before a new wave of haute-... Read More

Dinner Review: The Treehouse Lounge
0 Comments. 1,843 Views. Posted 20 Oct 2011 @ 8:51am.
The suburb of Balaclava in Melbourne's south-east may not be the best known or most desirable culinary destination in such a great gastronomic city as mighty Melbourne, but this place is an absolute treat, and well worth discovering for diners south of the Yarra. Venturing there from Northcote was a reasonable hike, but Punt Road was uncharacteristically reasonable on this Sunday evening, and the... Read More
Dinner Review: Grumpy's Green
0 Comments. 1,433 Views. Posted 11 Oct 2011 @ 9:28am.
Grumpy's Green is tucked away in that grey area of Smith Street where gentrification has taken hold exactly the right amount - you can take your pick of delightful cosy little bars and still get shived on your way to the ATM. The decor is tasteful, fun and a little bit quirky. The menus are printed inside vintage children's story books. The lighting is nice, the staff are friendly but... Read More
Palookaville Dinner Review

Palookaville, conveniently placed towards the 'Paris end' of Brunswick St, is a restaurant and bar where value-driven food is the calling card. Heading in early on a Friday evening, the dim, open-plan dining room, complete with pool table, has got a few bodies in seats and some quiet music to the match the relaxed atmosphere, giving you a nice space to chat with your friends without a raised... Fireflies

Fireflies takes up the ground floor of a grand Victorian building on the corner of Newry and Nicholson streets, a quiet restaurant with understated style. Inside the double glass doors you'll find an intimate but airy space with exposed brick work, high ceilings and wide arched windows with leadlight details. Low lighting bounces off worn floorboards, giving the place a warm, smoky glow. You... Read More

We've almost hit the halfway mark for another brutal Melbourne winter this year and for a lot of us, many of our more fortunate peers have taken off into northern climes to escape what has been a truly bitter chill. Luckily for the rest of us, left here to endure remaining weeks, there is Cruzao Arepa Bar. Offering Brunswick Street's rugged up masses the chance to envelop themselves in a tropical... Read More
Hot Tip : The Standard

A few streets back from the busy main drag of Brunswick Street sprawls the Standard Hotel. From the outside it is towering and unassuming, but pushing through the doors leads you to a mish-mash world of character and charm. Between the wall posters that look lifted from the ‘50s and the bar shelves crowded with every form of booze imaginable, it kind of feels like home – but when your cool uncle... Read More
Review : Dinner, The Arcadia Hotel

Walk down any major road in Melbourne, and you are destined to come across a local bar offering some form of food and pot deal. Whether it’s chicken parma, burger or steak, it seems that these deals are the perfect tonic to the midweek sales lull experienced by the food trade in most major cities. It makes perfect sense, and offers diners the opportunity to sample the culinary delights of an... Read More
Dinner Review : The Rochester Castle Hotel

You’ve no doubt found yourself over the years slumped over in a booth at The Rochy without quite knowing how you got there or which friend shaved off your right eyebrow. The semi-grungy Fitzroy pub is a bit of an institution in the North, thought to primarily cater for university students wanting to indulge in a little (as lifted from the bathroom room wall) ‘Mack on Wednesdays’. In stark... Read More

If you frequent the North, you probably already have a soft spot for The Gem - that welcoming front bar, generously filled with attractive 20- and 30-somethings in an atmosphere which makes your future plans for that evening melt away. It's hard to leave The Gem and even more so after you've had a crack at their Winter menu. And by that I mean it's nearly physically impossible unless you're being... Read More

Perched atop the Dandenongs, an hour East of Melbourne, Kelly's Bar And Kitchen is made for winter - all warmth and red wine. What the bar lacks in phone reception, it makes up for in general ambience. There's something pretty damn pleasant about sitting next to a crackling open fire in a heritage-listed log cabin that was built a Century before your birth. The menu is thick with some history,...
