Ben Folds Five : Draw A Crowd

Ben Folds irks me, but inevitably he says something funny and self-deprecating and I am forced to like him. This tune (which should have been called and will be remembered as Dicks On The Wall) includes the following line: “I only wanted to be Stevie Wonder, but I got to settle for this vanilla thunder.” True. Three years since calling it quits, Ben Folds Five are finally back. The trio from North Carolina came together back in 1993, proclaiming themselves ‘‘punk rock for sissies’’ and breaking through with singles like Underground, Brick and Army while the mass of the alt-music world was moshing to ‘90s grunge. There was seven years, three albums, and a multitude of hits which made... Read More
Ben Folds Five : Do It Anyway

Ben Folds hits an insipid new low with this tinkling, preachy how-to-live-your-life indie piano nerd ballad. The refrain is such a weird and flat anti-musical exercise that you have to wonder what level of irony is being employed here. He’s done some lovely, funny and affecting things over the course of his career, but this irritating, over-cranked tune is none of those. Read More
Fatty Gets A Stylist

Fatty Gets A Stylist masterminds, Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall take tea on a rare sunny June day at a South Melbourne café to discuss the finer points of what constitutes taking a risk in music these days. For one, both agree calling a band Fatty Gets A Stylist earns a big tick but the most intriguing development in the risk department is that the brand new release - a co-write with hubby... Read More

Currently the number one most played song on Triple J, the video for Sparkadia's China has finally dropped. The video was shot in Victoria earlier this year. It features rollerskates, lipstick, rolling landscapes, people in suits in water, balloons, car rides, villains and thieves... and all other kinds of abstract imagery, kind of in the vein of El Guincho.   Their new album is going off... If you  you were wondering who the support was for Ben Folds' upcoming shows, it's Brisbanite and ARIA chart-topping Kate Miller-Heidke.   She's blonde and cute and with her spine-tingling voice, a perfect addition to the set. After supporting Folds on his last tour, it makes a lot of sense that he'd team up with her again as she's one of the best pianists in the country.   Folds... Read More

In support of the his new album, Lonely Avenue, the ridiculously talented and basically loved-by-all Ben Folds and his band will be touring Australia in May 2011.   Lonely Avenue is yet another tragically beautiful collaboration between Ben Folds and novelist Nick Hornby; they worked together previously on Has Been, Folds’ 2004 solo album. The album received rave reviews, setting the... Read More
