So then, what’s the band name and what do you ‘do’ in the band? SMRTS. I am Predrag Delibasich, one of the three guitarists. What do you think people will say you sound like? World music dying at the hands of garage rock. What do you love about making music? Being able to do it with friends. What do you hate about the music industry? The industry bit. If you... Read More

Ali E : Landless

Local songwriter Ali E (Damn Terran) has released a pacey but atmospheric new single from her forthcoming debut solo album. The guitars buzz and hum in a slightly breathless rhythm and Ali’s voice, drenched in reverb, expands to fill the gaps. A slapping 4/4 drum beat kicks after a few moments which is actually a little distracting, propelling the song forward at an uncomfortable pace that seems... Read More

This is a story about overdoing it, about when you get so excited about food you lose track of right and wrong. The people in this story work in the media, so to protect their branding, I've hidden their identities with clever photoshopping. Self Potato I'll just call them Michael A. and Dr. Scott. We'd just stumbled out of an informal Catalan Tapas bar, where we'd been gorging... Read More

Dinner Review: Grumpy's Green

Grumpy's Green is tucked away in that grey area of Smith Street where gentrification has taken hold exactly the right amount - you can take your pick of delightful cosy little bars and still get shived on your way to the ATM. The decor is tasteful, fun and a little bit quirky. The menus are printed inside vintage children's story books. The lighting is nice, the staff are friendly but... Read More

Tripping Laws

In writing this column I must be honest about the fact that I have never taken a recreational drug in my life. The closest I've come to a psychedelic trip is the gentle sugar high of red cordial. So from an outsider's perspective I at least have no real bias towards condoning drug use, which is what I'm about to do. Laws around drugs are intended to protect us, yet they are laden with... Spotlight : Tyranny of Distance

The 'tyranny of distance' we feel living on the edges of a geographically remote and vast country is often the thing attributed to making Australia, and particularly Melbourne, so culturally and creatively rich. We rely on ourselves and work almost independently in a different season, time zone and hemisphere than most of the developed world, so it makes sense that we've managed to cultivate a... Read More

Walk down any major road in Melbourne, and you are destined to come across a local bar offering some form of food and pot deal. Whether it’s chicken parma, burger or steak, it seems that these deals are the perfect tonic to the midweek sales lull experienced by the food trade in most major cities. It makes perfect sense, and offers diners the opportunity to sample the culinary delights of an... Read More

Review : Dinner - The Gem

If you frequent the North, you probably already have a soft spot for The Gem - that welcoming front bar, generously filled with attractive 20- and 30-somethings in an atmosphere which makes your future plans for that evening melt away. It's hard to leave The Gem and even more so after you've had a crack at their Winter menu. And by that I mean it's nearly physically impossible unless you're being... Read More

Q-bar Closed Down

Melbourne's iconic Q-bar has closed its doors today. It was open for over a decade and it's the end of an era. Beat has been told that the block on the corner of Chapel Street and Toorak Road will be used for residential development next year. The possibility of the space being used for events in the interim is still open, however Q-bar as we know it is officially no longer.... Read More
