The Used : Vulnerable
0 Comments. 34 Views. Posted 18 May 2012 @ 2:13pm.
A cruel critic/fan might say that The Used and My Chemical Romance are almost interchangeable. There are certainly strong similarities in sound and style between the two bands. Bert McCracken and Gerard Way employ very similar, higher-end vocal stylings. Both bands play that very theatrical, alternative pop/punky style of rock. Both appeal to a very similar fanbase. Check out Moving Out for... Read More

The krautrock-loving Nootropics ushers in a clear change in sound for Baltimore art-rock quartet Lower Dens, though it has much in common with their debut album, Twin Hand Movement. Both conjure up a dark, stark mood that goes a long way in making up for their inconsistencies. There are some undeniably captivating moments on Nootropics that immediately catch your attention and make this a... Read More

Maidenhair is a party album of sorts, hitting an appealing middle ground somewhere between civilized dinner party and 3am PARTY. Bedroom electronica can be obscure to the point of only turning up in a select few other bedrooms, but the latest sample-swamped collection of collages from Max Crumbs (aka sometime hardcore drummer Max Kohane) is destined to be enjoyed by a wider audience. ... Neil Young & Crazy Horse : Oh Susannah

Young’s first album in nine years is a collection of folk rock tunes – traditional songs reworked in a Yard Birds fashion, judging by the single. In this bizarre version of Oh Suzanna, you can just make out the line, "I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee," but it bears no resemblance to the twanging hillbilly bluegrass of the original. I’m not sure it’s improved, neither. There’s a... Read More

Melbourne artist Justin Wilding Stokes has a debut album, Bird’s Bread, due out this week. The lead single has a breezy and a bouncing oom-pah beat, an homage to Sgt Pepper that wafts into a clattering reverie echoing A Day In The Life and half a dozen early songs by Blur. I’ll Love You.. is lively and pretty but not striking – the melody plods in a fairly predictably way. If anything here is... Read More

Taken from their forthcoming sophomore album, Gun Has No Trigger sees the Dirty Projectors folding an crooning soul rock melody – something Simply Red might have toyed with, back in the day – into an increasingly strident harmony by the band’s idiosyncratic female vocalists.
