Five words that describe your genre:Rock’n’roll garage pop.   When and why did you start writing and playing music?Like a lot of people reading this, I can’t imagine not writing or playing music. To write is obviously to express, and rock music is one of the greatest methods of self-expression ever. Store Bought Cool have all been performers and players of music since teenage years, to stop... Read More

After he was announced as the headliner of this year's Splendour In The Grass yesterday, Melbourne fans have been eagerly anticipating the possibility of a Jack White sideshow - especially considering he was one of the select main acts on the poster not to be suffixed with "only Australian show". We can expect a selection of classics from the Jack White canon, which includes The White Stripes,... Read More
Jack White : Blunderbuss

People liked The White Stripes because people like rules. From the outset, the world-conquering Detroit duo aligned themselves to an intangible manifesto. Some aspects were upheld rigorously – the tri-colour aesthetic, the ruse of siblingry, the admonishment of setlists – and some were bent or broken. It’s easy to draw the analogy between White’s trajectory and that of his favourite film’... Read More

As if the Dig It Up! invitational announced by Hoodoo Gurus wasn't huge enough, the celebration has now been extended to take over four stages across three venues this coming Anzac Day. With the first announcement including The Sonics, seminal Australian outfit Died Pretty, US hard-rock outfit Red Kross, Japanese rock and rollers (and Tarantino favourites) The 5.6.7.8's,... Slow Club

Almost two years ago to the day, Slow Club stole my last twenty bucks. At Sydney Festival to see Camera Obscura, I was stunned by the opening act who all but blew them off the stage. Unsure if I’d ever be able to hear their music again, I almost had to fake a seizure to get through the crowd at the merch stand to grab their first album, Yeah, So?. The long, penniless walk home was worth it... Read More

Hanni El Khatib so delicately describes his music as "songs for anyone who's ever been shot or hit by a train. Knife fight music." He adds that it is "the perfect soundtrack to get killed to." Strangely, somehow that just seems to fit perfectly. He has taken his live show to huge venues across the United States touring with Florence and the Machine, yet his raw, gritty tones and his slick,... Read More
The Bloody Hollies

To hear The Bloody Hollies is to hear the kind of rollicking, devil-may-care attitude that harkens back to the days when sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll were more than just a catchphrase; they were a way of life. This fearless aesthetic is prominent not only on Yours Until The Bitter End , their fifth and latest full-length but also in their bombastic live show. But there's more to The... Read More

The Jagermeister Independent music awards celebrate independent music - what does it mean to you to be an independent artist?  Hard work. What's the biggest challenge to being an independent artist?    I suppose for most independent musicians there is a lower level of resources at hand to assist you. Less money, less help, But more control creatively.   And the best bit?... Read More

It’s nothing against Australia, it’s just that singer-songwriter Kim Churchill is a travelin’ man, which means there’s only so much territory you can cover despite this geographically vast land of ours. In the lead up to his last tour of Australia for the year before heading overseas, Churchill says it’s a bitter-sweet feeling playing his upcoming round of farewell shows. “I think it’s just as... Wanda Jackson : The Party Ain’t Over

Wanda Jackson, a guitar-wielding trailblazer armed with a sexy sneer and a primal growl, produced some of the best and most authentic rockabilly songs of the 1950s. If you were lucky enough to witness her stellar performance at The Corner Hotel last year you'd know that age has not diminished her prodigious vocal talents or her ability to work a crowd.   Watching her blow the roof... You may have been wondering why you hadn't heard from The White Stripes as a duo for a while - a bunch of solo work from Jack but nothing else - and it turns out that it's because they have officially broken up.   Their website displays a message telling their loyal fans that the band are no longer together as of February 2.   "The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack...
